Canton School Committee Highlights: Prepping for Thursday's Public Hearing

The Canton School Committee talked budget cuts once again.

The Canton School Committee is preparing for a public hearing on Thursday on the . Up for discussion will be budget cuts for the Canton Public School District. Currently, the school needs to cut, or offset with other revenue, $1.391 million, according to School Committee Chair .

Canton residents are welcome to attend the hearing being held at Canton High School at 7:00 p.m. on April 7.Β 

"On Thursday, we will get into the meat" of the budget issue, Schutt said.

Last week, the School Committee discussed several issues, including the budget. Here are a few highlights from the March 31 meeting:

  • The School Committee discussed potentially and will continue the conversation at the public hearing on April 7. The committee talked of cutting a custodian, a library assistant, an elementary teacher, a hearing impaired teacher, and someone from the art and music departments, according to the chair.
  • The Superintendant of Schools is meeting with the CTA on these proposed cuts this week and will continue talks on Thursday at the hearing, Schutt stated.
  • Parents and supporters of PACE advocated for keeping the $50,000 in funding for the PACE program, a program for gifted students in Canton Public Schools.Β 
  • The School Committee did not discuss the potential , as they spent much of the prior meeting on the subject. The ideas for saving athletic programs and increasing fees will be brought up on Thursday, Schutt added.
  • The Canton School Committee heard from Eileen Chaput on the proposed and approved the proposal. Click to read more on the Luce Playground Project.
