Canton Student Wins Spot at Comcast South Shore Regional Spelling Bee

Canton's Courtland Priest will compete for chance to advance to National Spelling Bee.

Canton’s will compete at the 2012 Comcast South Shore Regional Spelling Bee. Courtland, an eighth grader, won the qualifying bee at earlier this month with the word “zigzaggedness,” earning the opportunity to compete in this spring’s Comcast South Shore Regional Spelling Bee, the local qualifier for the renowned Scripps National Spelling Bee.

“We are proud to be sponsoring the Comcast South Shore Regional Spelling Bee as part of our ongoing commitment to invest in the local communities we serve,” said Steve Hackley, Senior Vice President of Comcast’s Greater Boston Region.  “We are very excited to see Courtland at the regional competition and we look forward to sending a student from the South Shore to Washington, D.C. to compete at the national bee in May for the fourth year in a row.”

The Comcast South Shore Regional Spelling Bee will be held at in Randolph on Saturday, March 24, 2012.  Courtland will compete against 25 other local students for the opportunity to move on to compete at the national level. Comcast will send the winner of the regional spelling bee plus one escort on a six-night all-expenses-paid trip to Washington D.C. to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

“We are grateful to Comcast for sponsoring this competition for the fourth straight year, as this is such a great opportunity for local students on the South Shore to receive public recognition as academic ‘All Stars,’” said Lisa Morrissey of LIDO Consulting Group, who organizes the regional bee. “This is a great showcase for local students who want to put their spelling knowledge to the ultimate test.”

Footage of the Comcast South Shore Regional Spelling Bee will be available in late March in the “Get Local” section of the On Demand menu for Comcast digital cable customers to watch at no additional cost.
