Matthew qualified for the state Geography Bee that will be held on March 30 at Worcester State University. He is one of 100 students who qualified on the written exam. He also builds solar cars, collects coins and rocks and reads "Harry Potter."

What was the winning question and answer in your school's Geography Bee?  There wasn't really one "winning question."

I was the last one standing when others all got their second question wrong (you get eliminated after getting two wrong).

My hardest question was actually during the class round. It was "This island country, who's main ethnic group is Han Chinese, is located in the South China Sea."  I correctly answered Singapore.

Do you like Geography?  Yes. I find it fascinating to learn about the different regions and cultures of the world.

What is your favorite activity?  My favorite activity is reading. I also really enjoy skiing and playing golf.

Anything else we should know? I have an extensive collection of rocks, minerals, and fossils. They were displayed at the last year.  I also collect coins, particularly old American coins. I was on a robotics team in the fall and our team made it to the state finals. I also do the Solar Car Club at GMS. We build our own solar cars that we'll enter in the Junior Solar Sprint at MIT in the spring.

I like spending time on the Cape in the summer and skiing in the winter.  I live with my parents, my younger sister and brother, and our three cats:  Emma who is 16, and our two kittens, Albus and Minerva (we're big Harry Potter fans and they are named after the Hogwarts professors Albus Dumbledore and Minerva McGonagal).
