Canton Whiz Kid: St. John the Evangelist's Fourth Graders

Accomplishments: St. John’s fourth graders deliver Meals on Wheels to senior citizens and parishioners every Tuesday. Their teacher Lauren Weidmuller said they feel privileged to do so.

The fourth graders rotate their service in groups of three, ensuring deliveries happen every week. Traveling with Principal Charlotte Kelly, first stop is Canton’s Council on Aging, then on to  three home visits to drop off food, talk with people and help out with whatever is needed.

 “They love seeing smiles when they walk in; they love bringing light to someone’s day,” Weidmuller said. Learning that the world is not perfect, these Whiz Kids ask how they can be of help.

Students share favorite stories with Weidmuller, like the woman with the dog they love to see, and the woman who cannot walk by herself. A welcome opportunity for them to take special care, ensuring everything is perfect before leaving her home.

Each class at offers a distinctive community service. The school’s website outlines part of the mission is to “give back to the community and do for others.”

Weidmuller reports that her fourth grade students keep up with current events, and are willing to do something. She said they have a big hope in their future and hope for what they can do to help others.

“It is all about teaching morals, and what is important in life,” Weidmuller said. These fourth grade Whiz Kids are taking that to heart, and putting it into action.
