Canton Youths Win Art Awards

Canton residents compete among thousands and win recognition for their work in Boston Globe Scholastic Art and Writing Competition.

The following is a press release:

Jake Ransford and Aidan Lee of Canton, and students at Boston College High School, both won Honorable Mention Art awards at The Boston Globe Scholastic Art and Writing competition last year.

This year, the 62nd year of the Art awards, the two young men did even better. Lee again won an Honorable Mention in Art, Ransford won a Gold Key Art award and a Silver Key Art award, both of which hung in the State Transportation Building, Park Plaza from February 13, 2012 until April 20, 2012.

Artwork entries from students in grade 7 through 12 include photography, mixed media, fashion design, drawing, printmaking, painting, and ceramics, among others. This is the second year that all art entries were submitted as digital images. Panels of three judges evaluated each of the 15 art and 10 writing categories.

This year, more than 8,000 students submitted work for evaluation. There were more than 9,500 works of art and almost 700 writing pieces, not including those in portfolios from more than 600 seniors.

The awards consist of Honorable Mention, Silver Key, and Gold Key. Individual works and portfolios are judged on the state level with selected Gold Key winners continuing on to national judging in New York.  Other students will receive Silver Keys and Honorable Mentions on the state-level.
