Eagles Wrestlers Have Happy New Year's Eve, Defeat Canton [VIDEO]

Sharon Wrestling Team defeats visiting Canton for the first time in at least four years.

The beat visiting Canton, 45-30, on New Year's Eve.

"We haven't beaten them in four or five years," Sharon Head Coach Anthony Lucie said. "It was nice to get the win against them."

Both teams' line-ups were short-handed due to the winter school vacation, Lucie noted.

However, Sharon capitalized on one Canton move: to forfeit at 106, and move their 106 wrestler to 113 against Eagles sophomore Joe Haviland, who sought his second win of the season, he said.

"They were hoping that their kid would win by a pin, which would wash that forfeit away," Lucie said.

"When Haviland pinned their kid, now they're down by 12 instead of being a wash. Either way, it was a tough decision for them."

Sharon led 27-6 at one point.

The Bulldogs fought back, though, cutting the lead to 9, 27-18.

"Sharon came out and wrestled really aggressive," Canton Head Coach Brian Caffelle said.

"They're a tough team. We thought we had the matchups that we wanted. At the end of the day, they came out and they wrestled hard."

Sharon (8-6) next competes at 10 a.m. next Saturday in the Norton Quad, at Norton High School. Canton (4-6) will compete again at 7 p.m. Wednesday at King Philip.
