Highlights from the Canton School Committee: Principal Search, Scholarship Awards

Announcements and updates from the Canton School Committee.

Here are a few highlights from the last May meeting:

The Search Continues for New Hansen Principal The district is still seeking to fill the open position, left by current principal at the Mr. Maxwell, who will be departing for Lexington at the end of the school year. Superintendent of Schools said the search committee received about 50 applicants, however, the "candidates didn't really meet the truly excellent criteria, so we are not naming a principal." The search for an interim principal has begun. The committee will consider internal interim candidates first, according to Granatino. "Ideally, we'd like to get someone home grown," he said.

New Date for Kindergarten The 2011-2012 start date for Kindergarten is now Wednesday, Sept 7. The calendar will be amended to reflect the new date, the committee noted.

Seniors Earn Their Education Dan Rubin, the guidance department director, said the recent scholarship awards night at CHS generated 179 scholarships. There were 73 seniors whom earned awards, with just under $250,000 awarded, Rubin noted. "It's one of the few events I feel that brings the entire community together and celebrates Canton," he said.

The next Canton School Committee meeting is being held on June 16 at 7:00 p.m. at Canton High School.
