In the Schools: Canton's December 5 Edition

Winning Warriors, Canton's Blue Hills Regional takes Super Bowl title.

Blue Hills Wins!
The Warriors prevailed in at Bentley University on Saturday, beating Cathedral High School, 16-14. Their victory followed a tense playoff game on Tuesday, which they won 25-22 over East Boston, on a field goal kicked by David Neil. Congratulations Warriors on an outstanding season!

Canton Public Schools’ Snow Day Procedures
With winter nearly upon us, the Canton Public Schools have posted inclement weather procedures, with details about snow days and delayed openings. Read the procedures here.

CAPE Awards Fall 2011 Grants
The Canton Alliance for Public Education awarded its Fall 2011 grants to teachers at and , as reported in Superintendent Jeffrey Granatino November letter to the school community. At the high school, the grant will be used to establish a Change Agents Club, which is purported to transform the social and academic environment at the school by holding conversations about race and ethnicity. The club plans to hold bi-weekly meetings, sponsor assemblies, set up a display at the high school, and create local TV programming.

At the Galvin, the grant will be used to establish a Lego Robotics program. The math and science departments at the Galvin Middle School are working to expand learning opportunities in the science, technology, engineering and math areas. The grant will be used to purchase ten Lego Robotics kits, which can be used by up to twenty students at a time. They hope to expand the program in the future.

The Spring grant cycle will close on May 4, 2012.

JFK Holiday Shoppe
held its on Saturday. Local-based vendors were on hand to assist residents with their holiday shopping, and there was a children’s table where prices ranged from $1-$5. The fifth grade classes also sponsored a bake sale at the event.

November Professional Development
Canton Public Schools personnel participated in a professional development day on Tuesday, November 8. Topics included response to intervention, a method of academic intervention; special education law; defining power standards, or the principal curriculum standards for various subjects; curriculum implementation; and website development. Staff at the high school worked on a self-study for the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) accreditation process.
