It's back-to-school time in Canton.

St. John’s Opening Day

Congratulations to teachers, parents and students at today, the opening day of the 2011-12 school year. Students in kindergarten through grade 8 are in classes today, with pre-k students beginning tomorrow. Have a great year!

Canton Welcomes New Principals

Three of the Canton Public Schools will have new principals this year. Dr. Bill Conard, a alumnus, will be the principal at the Galvin Middle School. At the , Ms. Kim Sefrino is replacing Jan Chamberlain, who served last year as Interim Principal. Mr. Peter Boucher, Canton’s Wellness Director for the past three years, is the new principal of the .   

CHS Water Damage

According to a letter from Superintendent Jeffrey Granatino, there was a water main break in the C Wing of Canton High School on July 22. The district’s maintenance and custodial team responded to the situation, along with the Canton Fire Department. The first and second floors of the C wing were impacted by large amounts of water, but repairs are expected to be complete by the opening of school. 

Luce Elementary Playground

On July 16, more than 40 parent volunteers and staff came together in a “community build” to help erect a new playground at Luce Elementary that was fully funded by the school’s CAPT. Led by President Eileen Chaput, the CAPT raised close to $35,000 during the school year to cover the cost of this project. 

School Committee Approves Family Cap on Athletic Fees

The School Committee approved a for athletics. The fee, which was set during last spring’s budget process, is now $195 per sport. The family cap will be four times that, or $780 per family. Members of the hockey program will still have to pay a $250 rink usage fee per player, and members of the swim team will also have to pay an additional $50 for a pool usage fee per player, regardless of how many family members may be playing sports. These additional fees are new and were voted in during the budget process last spring to help offset the budget deficit. Students who qualify for free or reduced lunch are exempt from athletic fees.

Flag Football and Ball Drop Fundraiser

On September 10, the Canton High Boosters will host an and golf ball drop fundraiser at the Canton High School turf field at 10:00 a.m. Entrance fees $5 adult/$3 children; golf balls $10 each. For more information, contact Kim White at 781-821-1351 or kim.white33@verizon.net

Blue Hills Regional News

opens for the year next week. Tuesday, September 6 is opening day for teachers and staff. Wednesday, September 7 is the first day for grade 9 and other new students, and the full student body reports on Thursday, September 8.
