In the Schools: Canton's June 20 Edition

The Class of 2011 graduated from in Canton on June 15.

Superintendent/Director James P. Quaglia addressed the soon-to-be graduates, saying, “You are embarking on a great journey, and doing it largely on your own…Congratulations!”

Quaglia, Chairman Fistori, and Assistant Superintendent/Principal Michael J. Barrett handed out diplomas and good wishes as the seniors moved on to the next phase of their lives.

The CAPT held officer elections on June 14. Elections were held during Tuesday night's meeting. The newly-elected officers are Katie Colson, President; Erin Weitz, Vice President and Julie Albert, Secretary. Dianne Wright will continue as Treasurer. 

In related news, Community-Build is scheduled for Saturday, July 16. The CAPT is seeking tools and adult manpower to install the playground under the direction of a certified playground installer. To volunteer, contact outgoing CAPT president Eileen Chaput at eileenchaput@gmail.com

World Language Program Registration

Global Child is accepting registrations for the after-school world language program in the fall. Spanish and Chinese classes are scheduled for each public elementary school in Canton; participants are encouraged to contact director Maribel Powell if interested in French. Summer Construction at JFK

Two major construction projects will be undertaken at the this summer. A building sprinkler system will be installed, and a two-story, four-classroom addition will be built, as well. There will be no access to the JFK building after June 29. There will also be restricted access to the fields, courts and playground. 

Interim principal Jan Chamberlain will resume her role as fifth-grade teacher and assistant principal after July 1. 

Still Time for the Barnes & Noble Bookfair

Those who missed the bookfair at Barnes & Noble last week can still support the Canton Schools. Visit www.bn.com/bookfairs through Tuesday to support Canton Schools by entering Bookfair ID #10494995 at check-out. 

Medication Pick-up

Student medications in the public schools’ health offices must be claimed by Friday, June 24. Any medication that is not picked up will be discarded, as the health offices do not store medications over the summer. Inhalers may be sent home with students with prior written permission.

Looking ahead to next year, medication forms are available in the health office or at http://www.cantonma.org/health/index.htm in the section titled "Medication Administration in the School Setting." The health staff requests that any necessary medication forms be completed this summer for children who will continue to receive medication during the 2011-2012 school year.
