Prom and graduation season, plus a publishing party and a retirement.

District Art Show a Success

The Canton Public Schools was held from May 23-26. For those four evenings, the gymnasium was filled with art created by all students from all schools, and many families and community art-lovers enjoyed the exhibits as well as hands-on arts activities. Congratulations on another artistic triumph!

The latest edition of Fresh Ink, the literary magazine, will be unveiled at an evening reception on June 16. English teacher Julie Ghostlaw, co-advisor for the magazine, is “very excited” for the launch and invites all interested students and families to join the reception at 6:30 p.m. at Barnes and Noble, 82 Providence Highway, Walpole. 

Mass Hospital School Holds Prom

On Thursday, May 12, students celebrated their prom at Lantana’s in Randolph. This year, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care (HPHC) and other volunteers came to MHS the morning of prom and created a beauty and hair salon for the students. The students received free haircuts and styles, manicures and makeovers. HPHC continued its day of service by decorating the prom venue, creating the feel for the 2011 prom theme, “The Wizard of Oz.” 

MHS Commencement

The commencement ceremony was on Wednesday, June 1 at Brayton School. This year’s commencement speaker was Robyn Powell, a 1999 graduate of the Massachusetts Hospital School in 1999. Powell holds a B.S. degree in Social Work from Bridgewater State University and a J.D. from Suffolk University Law School in Boston. She is currently an Attorney Advisor at the National Council on Disability, an independent federal agency that advises the President and Congress on matters concerning people with disabilities. 

St. John’s 8th Grade Year-end Events

The eighth grade class at is busy with its end-of-year events. On June 3, the entire class made a trip to New York City. Back in Canton, they have a trip to Canobie Lake Park today, followed by an excursion to Boston tomorrow for a Duck Tour and a visit to the Hard Rock Café. Class night is on Wednesday evening at 6:00, and the class will be on retreat all day Thursday. They will bid adieu to St. John’s at their Graduation Mass on Friday evening, June 10 at 6:00 p.m. 

High School to Offer Driver Ed

The next Driver Education course will be held June 24 through 30 from 8:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. at Canton High School. Sign up begins tomorrow, Tuesday, June 7, first thing in the morning, at the CHS main office. More details at the Canton High School website.  

JFK Reading Specialist to Retire

reading specialist Yvonne Gunzburger is retiring, after 31 years in public education serving children in the field of reading. She spent most of her time this past year supporting and coaching teachers in implementing the new ELA program at JFK, while working with small groups. Her future plans include a trip to Israel and time on the Cape with her family. Her plans also include more time spent educating educators about teaching reading. Best wishes to her on her retirement.
