The Department of Engineering and Robotics Club recently competed in the MATE (Marine Advanced Technology Education) 2011 New England Regional Underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) competition at Massachusetts Maritime Academy in Bourne. Eighteen teams from as far away as New Jersey competed in the all-day event. Teams were judged on four criteria: a written technical report, a descriptive poster display, an evaluation of a group oral engineering presentation and in-pool performance of multi-underwater missions with the ROV.

team, coached by Dr. Michael Meyers and Mr. Dan Hamill, finished third overall, and was given the “Guts and Glory” Award for overcoming adversity and still performing well during the mission portion of the competition. The team experienced an unexpected problem with one of the three video cameras and had to drive partially blind during the mission.

JFK Assesses Student Fitness

physical education teacher Martin Sasin recently notified parents of a physical fitness assessment tool in use at the school. MicroFit HealthStar, a student assessment and class management software program purchased by CAPT for the Kennedy Physical Education Department, has, according to Sasin, “greatly improved my ability to give (parents) information about the health and fitness of (their children.)”

Each year all students are tested in five areas of physical fitness (flexibility, abdominal strength, upper-body strength, speed and agility, and cardiovascular endurance.) The MicroFit program is customized to match student results with national standards. From these five test results, the program averages a “Total Fitness Score” for each child, rating each student as “Needs Improvement,” “Fair,” “Fit” or “Excellent” in each category. Sasin cautioned that the report is not meant to upset the child, but rather to raise awareness and encourage improvement.

“Many students have trouble with some aspect of fitness and it is difficult to achieve at a high level in all of the tests,” Sasin said.
