King Philip Swimming Earns Double Victory Over Canton

The KP boys defeated Canton 95-70, while the girls won 92-78.

The King Philip swimming teams continued their tear through the Hockomock League against Friday afternoon at

While the boys tean had no trouble getting past the Bulldogs, 95-70, the Canton girls had the Warriors on the run before KP took the lead with three events to go and won, 92-78.

“Canton has improved so much over the past few years, and they’ve wound up with a lot of dept, something I wasn’t necessarily ready for,” KP head coach Heather Tomassian said.

The Canton girls shocked the Warriors early on with a victory in the 200 medley relay from the team of Alison McHugh, Amanda Walsh, Shannon McLaughlin, and Kim Frazer (2:05.85) and in the 200 freestyle from McLaughlin (2:10.11). While both times were good enough for victories, they were also just above the qualifying standard for the state meet, not that Canton coach Lori Mooney is worried about not getting them.

“This is the time of the year it’s going to happen. I would expect Wednesday at best Friday no later,” Mooney said.

Unable to get a lead and down by 10 through the first five events, the Warriors were forced to shuffle their remaining two relays and switch around swimmers for the next four individual events.

Freshman Carley Schnabel was a last-minute substitution in the 100 freestyle. After winning the 50 freestyle earlier(26.73) Schnabel helped cut into the Canton lead with a win in the 100 (57.29).

The Warriors tied up the meet after the 500 freestyle when Stephanie Nassason’s last minute placement and win (5:10.33) in the event helped wipe out a 12 point lead to tie up the meet at 55-55 with four races to go.

“I put in Stephanie Nasson who you can pretty much count on for a win so I put her in and it really helped,” Tomassian said.

With wins from the 200 freestyle relay (1:51.77), Sydney Nasson in the 100 backstroke, (1:05.95), and the 400 freestyle relay (4:02.55), the Warriors put away the Bulldogs to walk away as victors.

With state qualifiers in every event, the boys have been given a freedom to move swimmers around a little without the pressure of trying to get those challenging qualifying standards. JP Sullivan returned to the 200 freestyle for only the second time this year with a winning time of 2:35.26.

Michael Choate added the first of the Warriros’s two new additions to their state qualifier list with a win in the 500 freestyle (5:13.13). Ryan Palmer got the second qualifier en route to a win in the 100 backstroke (58.92).

While not victories, the Bulldogs saw improvement and personal bests from John Whittermore in the 100 breaststroke (1:20.58), Scott Buresh in the 500 freestyle (6:01.77), and a PR from Eric Newton in the 100 butterfly (1:05.62)

The wins improve KP’s records to 7-0 for the boys and 6-1 for the girls. The Bulldogs are now 2-3 for both teams.

The Bulldogs will look to bounce back against Sharon on Jan. 20 while the Warriors travel to Stoughton on Jan. 16.
