Boys Basketball: Bulldogs Fall to the Hawks, 44-45

Monday's game was a heart-breaker.

Although the team trailed only a total of 70 seconds, they dropped a heart-breaking one-point loss, 45-44, to the visiting Southeastern Hawks on Monday evening. The Bulldogs beat the Hawks back in early January, 58-43.

The Hawks drained a three-point field goal with 45 seconds left to grab just their third advantage of the game, 45-43. The Bulldogs had a couple of opportunities to tie the game, but could only convert on one of two free throws from

Canton had entered the fourth quarter leading 42-36 and did not connect on a single field goal in the entire eight minutes. Gavigan was responsible for the two points on free throws.

Southeastern's only other leads came on the first bucket of the game, 2-0, and briefly in the third quarter at the 4:53 mark, 32-31.

The Bulldogs seemed to be in control throughout the game, leading after the first quarter, 15-11, and at halftime, 25-21. Canton could not put the Hawks away though as its largest lead came with 1:44 remaining in the first quarter on a three-pointer by

Full-court pressure from the Bulldogs forced numerous Southeastern turnovers in the first half, as well as a suffocating zone defense.

Canton, playing its third game in four days, struggled offensively, but still led 29 of the 32 minutes. McCabe led the Bulldogs with 13 points, while Gavigan added nine and senior captain Josh Sheehan finished with seven points.

The game saw four ties and four lead changes with the game's high scorer being Southeastern's junior Savon Edwards-Gold with 15 points.

Canton had picked up a big win at Sharon on Sunday in a make-up game, 63-58, avenging an early-season defeat to the Eagles.

The Bulldogs are now 5-11 overall and will  be back in Hockomock League action on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. at Oliver Ames. Canton is currently 2-9 in Hockomock play and 2-4 within the Davenport Division.
