Boys Lacrosse: Foxborough Beats Canton, 14-3

Tough game for Canton High Boys Lacrosse team.

It started as a two-goal contest, but in the end, Foxborough demolished boys lacrosse team, 14-3 Friday.

“Foxborough out classed us,” Canton Head Coach Bill Bendell said. “They’re a very strong team. They took it to us early and then it was hard to catch up.”

Foxborough’s Cam Felix got the Warriors on the board nearly a minute into the first quarter and after his quick strike; him and his team tallied an additional five goals before halftime, as well as stole any momentum away from Canton.

James Stather recorded two of his six goals during the first half, while Jake Hyland, Tyler Ames and Jake Socorsso helped to push the lead away from the Bulldogs.

“We just had a lot of fast breaks and they were giving it to me down low and I just put it in,” Foxborough’s James Stather said.

“I don’t know that we’ve ever had anybody score six [goals] before, but Connor Whalen had six assists. He’s usually the guys who’s scoring that many goals,”  Foxborough Head Coach Matt Noone said.

“We have a team that is very unselfish and they don’t mind making the extra pass. These guys have been playing together so long, but a lot of them of them are the result of making one extra pass to find [the guy] who has the easy lay-up and James Stather just happened to be the guy who resulted in that today.”

Cam Felix and Alex Noonan both added three goals of their own, which complimented Stather’s play, but another reason that the Warriors were so successful was due to Greg Stamatov’s great goaltending. Stamatov denied Canton’s 18-of-21 shots, which clearly baffled the Bulldogs offense, as well as Coach Bendall.

“[Stamatov] was phenomenal,” Bendall added. “ He is an excellent goalie, made some great saves and even better than that he made some great outlet passes to spark their fast break, so he was impressive.”

“Every position is important, but it’s nice to have when your defense breaks down to have that last option,” Noone said.

Despite allowing 14 goals, Canton was able to register three goals thanks to Nick O’Connor who ended the game with a hat trick.

With the win, Foxborough improves to 3-0, while Canton fell to 2-1. Yet, while the Warriors may indeed be undefeated in and outside of the Hockomock League, Coach Noone is still stressing to the motto of one game at a time.

“The second you let your guard down is the second you get bit. We play with confidence and I want [my team] to play with confidence," Coach Noone said. “I’m confident in the team that we have, I’m confident in my coaching ability, but am I confident on any given day that somebody can beat us? Yeah.”
