Canton High's Gymnastics Team Hopeful for the Future

Despite a tough season, the gymnasts are optimistic for next year.

Although the gymnastics team lost their final meet to Attleboro, 121.75-113.2, and finished the season 0-7, there is still plenty of reason for optimism for the Bulldogs and their future.

A young team with eight freshmen, is graduating just one senior from this year's squad. Despite lack of experience, there have been several stand out performers.

"This year has been a growing season," said Head Coach Carla King. "All of the freshmen have shown great improvement throughout the season."

The Bulldogs had 10 performers at last weekend's Hockomock League championships. In the all-around category, both junior Jessie Brooks and sophomore Liz Mason represented Canton.

Lone senior and co-captain Siena Terenzio competed in the vault and floor events, freshman Lizzy Doherty was on vault and bars, while junior co-captain Becca Pulcini appeared on the vault and floor exercises.

Five other freshmen competed in a single event at the championships: Jessica Crimi (bars), Jillian Burke (beam), Katie McGlaughlin (beam), Micalah Slayton (beam) and Rachel Lebovitz (floor).

According to King, Pulcini has been the top scoring gymnast for the Bulldogs on the season.

"Becca was out in the beginning of the season, but has been scoring 9.0 and above on both floor and vault," explained King. "Becca's routine on floor has very difficult tumbling skills along with strong jumps of equal difficulty."

Pulcini finished off a strong campaign by taking home the 2010-'11 individual vault championship for the Hockomock League with a season-high score of 9.25. She also earned a well-deserved league all-star award.

Terenzio, who was also named a Hockomock all star, was a key component of this year's team.

"(Siena) has shown great team leadership throughout the season. For the first time, she competed on three events," said King. "Siena's floor routine shows off her skills in dance and she is always having fun and smiling while competing."

With a roster of just 12, the younger gymnasts received plenty of experience that should serve them well in the coming seasons.
