Canton Legion Wins On Brownie's Night

Baseballers beat Foxborough, 3-1, after GM throws ceremonial first pitch.

The baseball team celebrated a special night for its general manager by defeating Foxborough Post 93, 3-1, at Canton Memorial Field Monday night.

Canton GM Bob “Brownie” Brown threw out a ceremonial first pitch.

“Brownie has been involved with Legion baseball for about 50 years, this may be his last so we wanted to make sure he got his due,” Canton Head Coach Colin Clapton said.

Foxborough scored its lone run off southpaw David Roberto in the top of the first inning.

Vinny Monahan reached on a Canton error and later scored on another error. Roberto then got Aiden Farrell to hit into a 4-6-3 double play, stranding two Foxborough runners and ending the early threat.

The Canton offense responded immediately with two runs in the bottom of the first, off Foxborough starter Thomas Brady.

The scoring started when Drew Blake’s single drove in Colin Clapton. A throwing error by Foxborough catcher Mitchell Goldenberg scored Blake, putting Canton ahead, 2-1. A double play ended the rally.

Canton scored again in the fifth.

Nathan Pedersen was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. He scored on an Andrew Vinciguerra sacrifice fly.

Roberto pitched a complete game for Canton, surrendering an unearned run on five hits while striking out six. He struck out the side in order in the seventh.

“He pitched excellent, really well, I was really eager to watch him throw. I had heard all good things and he delivered tonight for us,” Clapton said.

Brady, meanwhile, allowed three runs on nine hits while walking two and striking out two. Reliever Robert Joyce recorded the final two outs of the sixth.

Offensively for Foxborough, Steven Fitzmaurice, Steven Nagle and Seth Khoury combined for four of the five hits.

“We’ve got to hit. He’s a good pitcher but we have to do a better job hitting. They swung the bat well and our guys haven’t pitched in a few weeks so they haven’t been able to get in a rhythm,” Foxborough Head Coach Billy Travers said.
