Wolfe Tones added the Pat O’Brien Cup to their 2012 trophy cabinet by beating Donegal, and importantly got themselves back into the senior football championship race.

The senior football championship is becoming crowded at the top of the table.

One team remains unbeaten, and that is Shannon Blues who will most likely remain so for at least another week as they face Armagh-Notre Dame next Sunday.  Despite playing some good football, the Brighton based outfit have yet to record a win at senior level this season.

Also up there are Donegal, Connemara Gaels, Wolfe Tones, and Kerry.  There are six playoff places up for grabs.  Aidan McAnespies, Galway, and Christopher’s could all make an argument for being there, while Cork would need to run the table in their next four games to have a shot.

The senior hurling championship is in its third week.

Tipperary are setting the pace in early going with a strong looking team that contains a number of youthful Dublin hurlers.  Wexford looking to claim top spot next week when they face Galway at the Irish Cultural Center in Canton Massachusetts.

Defending champions, Galway, will be hoping not to leave it as late as last year when the westerners made a run over the second half of the season.  Tom’s got off the mark last week with a draw against Tipp – it could be another tight championship on the hurling field!

It is refreshing to see the Ladies Football Championship rejuvenated with the entry of Connacht ladies – and the new club made their mark early with a fine win over defending champions, Tir na nOg.  T

At junior football level Wolfe Tones are on pace to defend the junior A title and have looked impressive over their first few games.  Kerry are top of the junior B table, and with the showing of the seniors over the first part of the season, the club is enjoying somewhat of a rebound in 2012 after a few seasons without making the playoffs.

Farther afield, outside of the traditional Irish strongholds in the North Eastern United States, on playing fields in New Hampshire, Maine, Hartford Connecticut, and western Massachusetts the junior C hurling championship is taking place between clubs formed by and composed primarily of hurlers born and bred in the United States.  Barley House Wolves are the oldest of the clubs, with Portland, Worcester, and Hartford discovering the thrill and excitement of playing and watching one of the world’s most ancient sports.
