Your Guide: Massachusetts Tax Free Weekend 2013

A two-day sales tax holiday in Massachusetts is set for this weekend, Saturday, August 10, and Sunday, August 11.

The tax holiday will lift the 6.25 percent levy on most items selling for less than $2,500 this weekend.

Excluded from the tax holiday are restaurant meals, cars, motorboats, tobacco and any item that costs more than $2,500.

Since 2004, the State Legislature has approved a two-day tax holiday in Massachusetts every year, with the exception of 2009.

“The sales tax holiday greatly benefits businesses and consumers, especially with families shopping for the new school year. This weekend has become very popular and helps boost sales during a traditionally slow month,” Canton State Representative William C. Galvin (D-Canton) said in a release.

“I’m happy to support this measure yet again, which encourages consumers to get out and support local businesses and their employees,” Canton's State Senator Brian A. Joyce (D-Milton) said in a release. “This annual event has become a good tool for our continued economic recovery.”
