Veteran's Day in Canton

Annual breakfast at the American Legion.

  The American Legion Post 24 is a veterans organization dedicated to patriotism, service and youth development. The center which is located behind Canton High School at 950 Washington Street accommodates a number of American Legion meetings that are held on a monthly basis. In celebration of Veteran's Day, a breakfast was held this morning at the Legion for all the Canton Veteran's. Memorial Park on Washington Street had floral wreaths and flowers placed next to many of the grave stones today. We salute you.

New Cottage Assistant Principal Awaits Opening Day

Former Canton Legion infielder -- and briefly Tampa Bay Devil Rays employee -- Andrew Zides likes his new home.

The Cottage Street School's administrative team picked up a veteran infielder this summer. New Assistant Principal Andrew Zides played for Canton High School; the Canton American Legion Post 24 baseball team, where his teammates included Sharon High School assistant coach Kee Arguimbau, as well as Adam Blaustein, the son of Sharon School Committee member Mitch Blaustein; and at Division I Quinnipiac University with Ari Kafka, the son of state Rep. Louis Kafka (D-Stoughton). The 30-year-old Easton resident also interned for both the Baseball Hall of Fame and for the Pawtucket Red Sox. And he worked for the then-Tampa Bay Devil Rays' scouting director's office, inputting data focusing on the June 2003 amateur player draft, during the spring …

Canton American Legion Post Team Beats Foxboro Friday

Canton beat Foxboro with a decisive 8-0 victory.

It was a rough day on Friday for Foxboro Post 93 against a strong Canton American Legion Post 24 team. Backed by a solid performance from pitcher Dave Roberto and great hitting, Canton was able to beat Foxboro with a decisive 8-0 victory. Despite getting out of a jam in the top of the first inning, Canton would come back to score in the top of the second inning. Chris Barletta’s double brought in Nathan Pedersen to get the first run of the game. One batter later, Dan Friedman’s single went just deep enough to score Math Bernstein and Barletta to expand the lead to 3-0.    Unable to get men on base, Foxboro struggled against the dominant performance of Canton’s Dave Roberto. Canton Legion Wins On Brownie's Night

Baseballers beat Foxborough, 3-1, after GM throws ceremonial first pitch.

The Canton American Legion Post 24 baseball team celebrated a special night for its general manager by defeating Foxborough Post 93, 3-1, at Canton Memorial Field Monday night. Canton GM Bob “Brownie” Brown threw out a ceremonial first pitch. “Brownie has been involved with Legion baseball for about 50 years, this may be his last so we wanted to make sure he got his due,” Canton Head Coach Colin Clapton said. Foxborough scored its lone run off southpaw David Roberto in the top of the first inning. Vinny Monahan reached on a Canton error and later scored on another error. Roberto then got Aiden Farrell to hit into a 4-6-3 double play, stranding two Foxborough runners and ending the early threat. The Canton offense responded immediately with…

Judy Moody Day  The Fiddlehead Theater Academy in Dedham will present Judy Moody Day in honor of that well loved book character.  The day will begin at 9:30 a.m. when fans are welcomed to the theater by local child actors and the book series illustrator.  At 10:00 a.m., there will be a special screening of Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer (due to be released on June 10) at the Dedham Community Theater.
