Canton Artist Gets An A

Canton artist Mona Podgurski is sharing her love of art through teaching.

Growing up, Canton artist Mona Podgurski always added an extra touch to her schoolwork.  “I would illustrate my reports,” she said. “I would add a drawing because I wanted to get an A, and it usually worked out pretty well!” A Canton resident since 1956, she is the treasurer of the Canton Art Association, having built the organization’s website, and recently placed second in the association’s Spring Show and Sale. Her watercolor “Cone Flowers Watercolor” placed just behind Laura Zanghetti’s winning piece.   “I am absolutely thrilled to come second to Laura, she is so talented,” Podgurski said. She started seriously drawing as an adult when her daughter was riding at the Lazy S Ranch in Canton. “I would watch her lesson and draw the horses…

Canton Art Association Annual Spring Show and Sale Lights Up the Library

Saturday's show was held at the Canton Public Library.

The composer Robert Schumann once said, “To send light into the darkness of men's hearts - such is the duty of the artist.” The Canton Art Association Spring Show and Sale opened at the Canton Public Library on Saturday and the library was truly bursting with light, color and brightness.  The show, greeted by spectacular spring temperatures and radiant sunshine, was comprised of nearly 50 works by members of the Canton Art Association.  The pieces were in multiple mediums from oil paint to photography, and were created by Art Association member artists from Canton and surrounding communities. “We hadn’t had a show for awhile,” said Ellen McHugo, President of the Association. “It was time for a member show for the public and we hope to do …

Canton Artist and Photographer Captures Stories Through Her Work

Canton resident uses her lens and paint brush to bring the community to life.

Cristina Hajosy is a photographer, an artist and a teacher. But those words do not fully capture the range of her art, the depth of her teaching, the essence of her photography–or how they all work together. Hajosy has been photographing weddings, babies, families and events and creating memories and stories for her clients through her photographs for 18 years. She has captured over 680 weddings. In her photography for weddings and events, the trained eye of a photojournalist works closely with her artistic sense, resulting in, as her website describes, “Simply moments in time made timeless.” A Canton resident for 14 years, Hajosy discovered the community when looking for a combination of convenience and space.  “I grew up on a farm in …

Over 100 people, cast, crew, friends and family packed the Regent on January 8 to view the comedy, written, directed and produced by Chandler, who used a local cast and shot the movie on location around the South Shore and Boston. Rock Ensembles Hit All the Right Notes

Local musician teaches young music lovers in his own School of Rock.

As long as you can play an instrument, you can make music. As long as you can sing and you know the words, you can make music. As long as you're taking your lessons and practicing, you can make music. So mastering an instrument is the same as making music. Right? Wrong, all wrong, according to Mike Rubin, an instructor at Stoughton Music Center where students from Canton, Stoughton, Sharon, Walpole, Bridgewater and other towns come to learn how to play their instruments and sing. Recently, the students began learning how to make music together. Rubin is also an accomplished guitarist and bassist who has performed on a variety of projects. A 1996 graduate of Northeastern University, he holds a Bachelor of Science degree with a minor in …
