Changes in Store for Hockomock League

Canton High could see more games come fall.

Canton High School athletes could be playing more league games come fall. The Hockomock League may be expanding this coming school year. Plans to add Taunton and Milford to the high school athletic league, which Canton High School plays in, are under way. Canton High’s Athletic Director Danny Erickson said initially, Canton had mixed feelings about the additions. “Some schools in the league really wanted to expand to make a fuller league of six and six,” Erickson said. “Canton had mixed feelings.” However, now that plans for expansion are moving forward, CHS is “happy with that.” Hockomock League principals voted 9-1 this month to accept Milford and Taunton for the 2012-13 academic year, Sharon Principal Jose Libano said Monday. The vote …

Sports, Staff Part of the Budget Discussion for School Committee

Committee struggling with a $1.2 million deficit.

Sports and staff could take a hit in Canton next year. Facing an estimated $1.2 million shortfall, the Canton School Committee is looking to make some cuts to the fiscal year 2012 budget. The School Committee is looking to cut, or find money, for the gap in funds–and athletics and staff are two of the possible cuts that are being discussed by the district. The town’s recommended budget for the school district is $30,440,978, Superintendent of Schools Jeff Granatino said a recent meeting. The district needs $31,631,457 to keep level service. The School Committee discussed ways to meet the budget, including eliminating three athletic teams at the high school, or potentially makeing staffing cuts, to close the $1.2 million gap. The board …

Boys Basketball: Bulldogs Beat Fairhaven

Canton 55, Fairhaven 50.

The Canton High School Boys Basketball team evened its record at 3-3 with an exciting non-league home victory over Fairhaven, 55-50, Sunday afternoon. After three close quarters, the final eight minutes was a game of runs, which saw both teams lose leads, until the Bulldogs finally secured the victory. Again, Canton was paced offensively by junior guard Joe McCabe with a game-high 25 points. Since returning from an injury, McCabe has been superb, combining his great outside shooting with his strong inside game. Fairhaven (4-4 overall and 2-3 in the South Coast Conference) again was led by Adam Mullen, who is one of the top players in the state. Mullen had 18 points, but down the stretch, in the final quarter, was shutdown by the tenacious …
