The 2013 Blue Hills Winter Festival is on Tuesday, Feb. 26 from 5 - 8 p.m. at the Blue Hills Ski Area at 4001 Washington Street (Rt. 138). The event is sponsored by Friends of the Blue Hills and the Blue Hills Ski Area. All ages are welcome to come and enjoy a night time hike with a naturalist, ski or board down the slopes, taste chili and other faire from local restaurants and kick back with a beer from the Blue Hills Brewery. There will also be Irish tunes of Songs For Ceilidh. This event was created to encourage people to enjoy this wonderful reservation and all it has to offer. Ski tickets will be discounted to $15. for the evening as well as $15 for rentals.

Adopt an animal through the Wildlife Guardian Program.
The Blue Hills Trailside Museum and small zoo are home to many animals who can no longer care for themselves out in the wild. It could be because they were injured or have lost their parents. The animals who call the Trailside Museum home are used to educate the public, promote awareness and active concern about about the natural world. Through the Wildlife Guardian Program you will adopt an animal and help support the many programs offered at the museum. You will recieve a personalized letter and a photo of the animal that you have symbolically adopted. On Saturday, Nov 17, the Blue Hills Reservation hosted a Dog Sled Fun Run along with the Yankee Siberian Huskey Club and Boston Snow Dogs who were on hand doing demonstrations. Owners on their bicycles and their dogs harnessed to run in front of their owners bikes raced around Houghtons Pond. The Yankee Siberian Huskey Club is the oldest Siberian Husky Club in America. Every other month the club meets in the Old Town Center Building in Bedford, Massachusetts. Some of the events that this club sponsors are an AKC specialty show and an AKC match, a few dog sled races including the well known Sandwich Notch 60 along with a working day where inexperienced dogs can team up with an experienced dog sled team. Also today, from 1-3 p.m., Blue Hills Reservation is hosting a Dog Sled Fun Run. Shooting stars will be flying early in the morning around Canton. The Orionids meteor shower promises to be a show worth watching.
The offspring of Halley's Comet are about to put on quite a show in the skies around Canton. Earth will pass through a stream of debris from Halley's Comet beginning Oct. 15, which will give us the benefit of the annual Orionids meteor shower—though you probably won't see much until a bit later. The shower should be at its peak the night of Saturday, Oct. 20, until just before dawn on Oct. 21. This year, the moon will be setting at approximately midnight, which will keep the sky darkened enough that—barring cloud cover—you should be able to see up to 15 meteors per hour.
