There is a full agenda for the Canton Board of Selectmen's meeting tonight. The BOS are meeting tonight at 7:00 p.m. at Town Hall. The agenda includes several items. The board will hear an "application for the alteration of premises" for Halfway Café; an operational budget presentation from Police Chief Ken Berkowitz; a presentation on the Community Preservation Act; and a Capital Budget overview, according to the agenda. Also on the agenda for tonight is a presentation from Avalon Bay Communities for Avalon Canton. The BOS will discuss updates on the recreation director recruitment process, Green Lodge Street/Add-a-Lane Project and the health reform law. The Canton Board of Selectmen are set to discuss Reservoir Pond and other issues tonight at 7:00 p.m.
The Res will be a topic of discussion at tonight's Canton Board of Selectmen meeting. Tonight's agenda includes a Reservoir Pond update, an assessors reclassification hearing and Safe Haven Act signs. The town has been in negotiations with the owners of Reservoir Pond over the past several months. The conversation includes repairs to the pond, which the owners must make, prior to the town accepting the pond as a donation. The update was tabled at the last selectmen's meeting on October 25. At the last meeting, the selectmen heard a presentation from Meditech on a parking expansion plan. The Board of Selectmen hired a new Animal Control Officer.
Canton's new Animal Control Officer Nadya Branca is passionate about animals and law enforcement. The town's newest employee started her new job this week. "I'm really excited to start," Branca told the Board of Selectmen last week. The new officer has a background in law enforcement. She worked for the MSPCA for seven years doing animal cruelty investigations and she also worked as a police officer for the police department in Martha's Vineyard and Bridgewater State College. The new Animal Control officer is also married to one of Canton's finest, Canton Police Officer William Branca. The board met Tuesday night and discussed the new ACO and the dam repairs at Reservoir Pond.
The town of Canton has a new Animal Control Officer. At Tuesday night's Board of Selectmen meeting, the board officially approved the hiring of Nadya Branca. Branca will fill the vacant spot and will start the full-time position on October 1. Branca worked for the town's Animal Shelter for the past year in a part-time capacity, Town Administrator Bill Friel said. Police Chief Ken Berkowitz and the acting Animal Control Officer gave her high recommendations, Friel said. Nadya replaces former Animal Control Officer Paul Bastable, who resigned last month. No more BYOB at Takara Japanese Restaurant in Canton. The Canton eatery, which had a bring your own beer and wine policy, has officially upgraded to an all-alcohol serving establishment. The Canton Board of Selectmen approved the Japanese restaurant's application for an all-liquor license at Tuesday night's meeting. Takara, located at 592 Washington Street, has been open for the past eight years in Canton. Also at Tuesday's meeting, the Town Administrator Bill Friel, updated the board on the Human Resources administrator job search. An auditor presented findings to the Board of Selectmen on expanding the department.
An auditor presented findings to the Canton Board of Selectmen last week and suggested expanding the town's current one-person Human Resources Department. The town is in the process of hiring a new HR administrator to work for both the town and the school department, according to Town Administrator Bill Friel. The town had received 50 applications so far and a the screening committee will begin review them at the beginning of July, he told the board. Some Canton voters to have new precincts, polling locations come January 1, 2012.
The town of Canton is getting "re-precincted." After the federal census of 2010, Canton is now making changes to its six voter precincts. Due to a mandate from the Secretary of State's office, the Board of Selectmen in conjunction with Town Clerk Tracy Kenney had to make some changes. At the Board of Selectmen meeting yesterday afternoon, Kenney presented the changes to the board. Due to the census, the town had to reexamine population totals for each precinct, she stated. As of the 2010 census, Canton has a population of 21, 561, Kenney said. There should be about 3, 594 voters in each precinct.
