The Canton American Legion Post 24 baseball team celebrated a special night for its general manager by defeating Foxborough Post 93, 3-1, at Canton Memorial Field Monday night. Canton GM Bob “Brownie” Brown threw out a ceremonial first pitch. “Brownie has been involved with Legion baseball for about 50 years, this may be his last so we wanted to make sure he got his due,” Canton Head Coach Colin Clapton said. Foxborough scored its lone run off southpaw David Roberto in the top of the first inning. Vinny Monahan reached on a Canton error and later scored on another error. Robert Brown founded the Canton American Legion Baseball team in 1965 and led the team until the summer of 2010.
For the past 45 years, Robert S. Brown has seen over 700 players pass through his team. Robert "Bob" Brown served as founder, coach and manager for the American Legion Baseball Team for four and a half decades. On Saturday, local officials, residents and former players came out to honor the 89-year-old founder. The veteran, who served during World War II as a Navy combat pilot, humbly thanked everyone for surprising him with the Robert S. Brown Day and celebration at the American Legion Post in Canton. The Board of Selectmen made the proclamation and Brown was also inducted into the Canton Hall of Fame. "Thank you all," Brown said from his seat. "It was a big surprise."
