This Canton High soccer star is in the spotlight.
ATHLETE-OF-THE-WEEK: CHRIS MURRAY NAME OF TEAM: Canton High School Boys Soccer Team WHAT THEY ARE SAYING: “In the 28 years of this program, with all the great teams and players that we’ve had, Chris Murray is among the very few that will be very difficult to replace. He was our captain and heart and soul of a very good team and although we had a balanced team, he kept us anchored, focused and made sure we stayed within the system. He has been a leader both on and off the field. He has exceptional ability to win every loose ball, to get the hit in the air, and has an incredible throw-in. He is an honor student and well-respected by his peers, coaches and teachers. He is also the captain of the basketball team. He is just a great young man …

Four first-half goals from Canton the difference in the Bulldogs' 4-0 win at Stoughton.
It was another tough afternoon for the young Stoughton High boys soccer team. It wasn’t for a lack of effort, but instead, it just continues to be a case of playing against more experienced and stronger teams in a Hockomock league that many think is among the top in the state. On Tuesday afternoon, an unbeaten Canton team (5-0-3 overall, 5-0-2 league and 3-0-1 in the Davenport Division) traveled to Stoughton and beat the Black Knights, 4-0, with four unanswered first half goals. The Bulldogs are among the best teams in the state. Over the last six seasons, they have only lost nine times in 97 games. The team returns most of the lineup from a year ago when it went unbeaten through the regular season, captured its third consecutive Hockomock…

First place teams battled on the soccer field Wednesday night.
It was a battle between two of the top boys soccer teams in the Hockomock League. Canton (3-0-3 overall, 3-0-2 league and 1-0-1 in the Davenport Division) hosted King Philip (2-1-3 overall and league and 1-1-1 in the Kelley-Rex Division.) Entering Wednesday night’s game, both teams were in first place in their respective divisions of the Hockomock League. It was also a matchup featuring the potent, offensive attack of Canton, outscoring its opponents, 15-2, and scoring 14 goals in the last three games, against the stifling defense of the Warriors that has allowed only four goals in five games and no more than one in any contest, this season. Canton dominated statistically and territorially, but couldn’t break down the very structured and …

The Canton High School Bulldogs boys soccer team earned their victory by shutting out Mansfield High School and netting four goals of their own.
The Canton High School Bulldogs dominated the Mansfield High Hornets Friday to pick up their second win in a row. Canton improved its record to 2-0-2 while Mansfield fell to 0-1-2. Canton’s coach, Danny Erickson, said the key to victory was to “play physical, we’ve got a lot of respect for them [Mansfield], we’ve got to play tough.” The Bulldog players must have received that message loud and clear. They outplayed Mansfield in every aspect of the game. They out-hustled, over-powered, and outscored the Hornets. Senior Matt Malloy struck first early in the first half for Canton High to give them the 1-0 lead. Shortly thereafter, senior captain Scott Levy added a second goal in the first half. The whistle blew at half-time leaving the …

Bloom's second half goal evens things with Canton.
The Sharon High School varsity boys soccer team left Canton on Saturday night with a tie on its won-lost record, and a head coach who was very pleased. Sharon senior captain Eric Bloom's goal at the 28-minute mark in the second half evened the score at 1-1, the final. The match was Sharon's season opener. "There's good ties and bad ties. This is a great tie," Eagles Head Coach Barry Kaye said. "I'm very proud of the kids. They played great. Our motto this year is 'Play to win,' but we played hard. "(Canton) hasn't lost here in three years. So, our goal coming in, we wanted to break the streak. We were close." The Bulldogs led 1-0 on Scott Levy's goal at the 27-minute mark of the first half. Canton's offense pressured Sharon throughout that…

Canton High's boys soccer team kicks off with a game today.
The Canton High School Boys Soccer team and Coach Dan Erickson have built a winning tradition. The team has advanced to at least the Division-2 South Sectional Semifinals in each of the last five years and to the Sectional Final in 2007. Last season, the Bulldogs went further than ever before by capturing their first sectional title and Erickson was awarded as the Boston Globe’s Division-2 Coach-Of-The-Year. Canton did lose in the state finals to a powerhouse Concord-Carlisle team, but it didn’t take away from the team’s incredible accomplishments that included the regular season Hockomock Davenport Division championship, the First Annual Classic Cup Title, The South Sectional title and the Hockomock League Sportsmanship Award, which …

Canton falls to defending champion Patriots 2-0 in D-2 state semifinals.
Canton High School became one in a long line of teams to lose to Concord-Carlisle High School in the MIAA boys' soccer postseason in recent years when the Bulldogs, the champions of the South, fell 2-0 to the North champion and defending D-2 state champion Patriots on Wednesday night. The teams met at a blustery Veterans' Memorial Stadium in Quincy in the D-2 state tournament semifinals, but only the Patriots (20-1-1) will be moving on. C-C will now attempt to defend its D-2 state title when it faces Central champion Nipmuc Region of Upton at Worcester State College on Saturday. The tournament ouster was especially hard for the Bulldogs to take considering it was their only loss of the season. Canton entered the game 17-0-4, but struggled …

The Bulldogs beat Sandwich in Sunday's game and head to the Division 2 state semifinals against Concord-Carlisle Wednesday.
In the impressive history of the Canton High boys' soccer team, there was one line missing. South champions. Twice, the 17-0-4 Bulldogs got to the finals in 2002 and 2007, but returned home with the trophy nobody wants: the runner up one. "We' know what it's like to get here and lose," Bulldog Head Coach Dan Erickson said. "We know that feeling." Now, they know what it feels like to win the title after defeating previously unbeaten Sandwich, 1-1 (8-7 in nine rounds of penalty kicks.) "That's a very tough way to lose a game," said Erickson. "It was a great game to win. Hats off to Sandwich. There were two undefeated teams out there." They played to a 1-1 tie through regulation and then in a sudden death overtime, the two teams went into the…
