Business Spotlight: The Turnpike Cafe in Canton The Turnpike Cafe, located at 958 Turnpike St. has been a staple in Canton for more than 50 years. New owners Patrick and Caroline Brodigan purchased the restaurant a year ago and plan to continue its tradition of keeping it in the family. The Brodigan family recently launched a new menu featuring many homemade favorites like burgers and a Greek wrap. The local ice cream chain plans to open nearly 250 shops in China during the next decade.
Canton-based Baskin-Robbins has signed franchise agreements as it plans to triple its presence in China, according to a Boston.com report on Wednesday. Along with Dunkin' Donuts, also based in Canton, Baskin-Robbins is part of the parent company Dunkin' Brands Group, Inc. The ice-cream chain said in a news release on Wednesday that the company is projecting to open 249 Baskin-Robbins shops in China during the next 10 years. Currently, the company has more than 90 locations in China, including shops in Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an, Hangzhou and Zhengzhou. Blue laws prohibit retailers from opening before midnight on Black Friday.
Black Friday is starting earlier than ever, as some national retailers have announced they will open the night of Thanksgiving, Thursday, Nov. 22. However, here in Massachusetts, state blue laws prohibit stores from opening until midnight, according to a report by the Boston Globe. Current blue laws prohibit retailers in the state from opening on Thanksgiving, thus preventing them from getting an early start on Black Friday sales, according to the Globe article. Some exceptions are restaurants, health care facilities and gas stations. Cristina Hurley moved to Canton in 2002 when she and husband Michael, a Canton native moved back here from New York City with their daughter. In New York Hurley worked for a high end jewelry company, "Reinstein-Ross" as a goldsmith for six years. She opened her showroom in Canton two years ago located at 3 Rockland St. Hurley grew up in San Juan, Puerto Rico and was exposed to the arts by her parents. Hurley's mother was an opera singer and her father was the conductor for the Puerto Rico Symphony. Her father's boss was married to a jewelry designer Jeanette Fossas. Pakeen Farm is located at 109 Elm St. in Canton. Just 20 minutes outside Boston, the Farm is 150 acres and owned by a family who started the farm in the 1800's. Owner Dave Bihldorff, along with his wife and mother, are carrying on the family tradition, yet with a new twist. A few years ago they decided that they wanted the farm to be a self sustaining year-round business. "During the Christmas season, we sell trees. Memories of Canton from 35 years ago.
Leslie Kramer has been a Canton resident since 1977 and has raised two daughters here. She is now the proud grandmother of two. In 1982 she and her husband opened Kramer and Company Jewelers on Washington Street across from the Canton Public Library. "What I miss most is the Canton Public Market which was located right where you and I are standing," said Kramer. "The building that our store is in was not here. The original building which had the market was torn down and this was put in it's place."

CABI donation to help fund Adventure Course at Hansen Elementary School.
Paul Clark from the Canton Association of Business and Industry presented a $500 check recently to Peter Boucher, principal, Lt. Peter M. Hansen Elementary School. The donation will help fund a Fitness Course around the school. The course will provide students, staff, families and the community a place to walk and run. There will also be stations that present challenging and fun fitness activities at the school.
