The Canton Animal Shelter has many kittens, cats and a female German Shepard who are all in need of loving homes. This week's featured kitten is Harlequin. She is an 8-week old tortie. If I didn't have 3 cats of my own and my visiting grandson cat Simba, then I would surely take Mindy. I spent over an hour at the shelter and this cat not only looks like one of those cats on the cat food commercials because of her long coat but her temperament is purrfect. She is sweet and rubs against you and looks at you when you're talking like she understands what you're saying. She is a …   more ›

Pet of the Week at the Canton Animal Shelter: July 7, 2012

Hef is one Top Cat.

Meet Hef! He has been living at the Canton Animal Shelter for over six months. Hef was turned in because his owner had too many cats and it was too much work. When Hef went to get neutered the vets noticed a scratch on his belly so he had to be quarantined in our shelter for six months. During that time we have grown to love him very much and he is the king around here. He is definitely a person in a cat body! He likes hugs and loves to play. He gets along great with kittens but is not a fan of adult cats. Hef likes to feel like the boss. He is very curious and wants to know what is going on at all times. He does have a medical issue that will need future care and maintenance. He has asthma and may possibly need a specific cat inhaler. …

Pet of the Week: Izzy

Meet Izzy, mom to a large litter at the Canton Animal Shelter!

Meet Izzy. Izzy was found in someone’s basement after she gave birth to a litter of kittens. She was very scared and not very trusting of humans. She was a very good mom who was very protective of her babies. She and her the kittens were rescued and brought them to the shelter, during which time she has come out of her shell. She is very sweet and likes to be petted. She would love to finally have a home of her own. Izzy is a cat with a personality. Her kittens are adorable but she is much more. The Canton Animal Shelter has many kittens but they also have older cats who are in desperate need of a home. Older cats are more settled and are often times more cuddly. They like to snuggle with their owner. Come by the Canton Animal Shelter and …

Pet of the Week: June 22, 2012

Meet Riley!

This week's Pet of the Week at the Canton Animal Shelter is Riley, a female German Shepard who is approximately 6- years-old. Riley was surrendered to Animal Control by her owner, who claimed that he found Riley through an ad on Craig’s list for $25.00. Riley was thin, had a dirty shaggy coat and severe eye irritation. When Riley's new master brought her to the vet, it was discovered that she had Lyme disease and Anaplasma, which is another tick-borne disease. Riley has a condition called dry eye. She will need eye ointment and drops for the rest of her life. She was treated for all of the above ailments and is slowly recovering. She is an absolute love and is very well behaved and quiet. So far Riley's only behavior issue is her dislike …

Canton Animal Shelter Pet of the Week: April 27, 2012

Won't you please help little Kane?

Kane was found outside on March 26, 2012, cold and alone. He was covered in ticks and very thin. Kane was cleaned up and put on a good diet but it was clear from the start that there was something more going on with him. It was wrongly assumed that he was an older cat judging by his appearance. After a trip to the Canton Veterinary Hospital it was learned that Kane is only 2- years-old and that he has diabetes. Kane may have been dumped by his owner because he was sick. This is a heartbreaking reality for some animals who require extra care. Until the Canton Animal Shelter can find that special person, it is seeking donations towards his care. The vet would like him to be put on insulin which can be costly. Kane is a wonderul cat who loves…
