Passover begins this evening and ends on Tuesday, April 2.
The holiday of Passover is also known as the Festival of Liberation or a Freedom Festival. It is the celebration of the departure from slavery to freedom and commemorates the Exodus of the Israelites from Egypt. This year, Passover begins on Monday, March 25 and ends on Tuesday, April 2. A major mitzvots of this holiday is to eat only unleavened bread, which signifies the Israelites fleeing with their bread, which had not yet risen. The meaning of mitzvot is doing a good deed from religious duty. Patch spoke with Rabbi Mendy Horowitz from the Canton Chai Center, located at 580 Washington St. in Canton: Patch: What is Passover? Rabbi Horowitz: The eight-day festival of Passover is celebrated in the early spring, from the 15th through the …

The Purim festivities took place on Sunday at Canton High School.
“Purim in the Shtetl” was this year’s theme for the Purim celebration sponsored by the Canton Chai Center, 900 Washington Street in Canton. Every year on the 14th of the Hebrew month of Adar the festival of Purim, which means "lots" is celebrated. This year it begins after sundown on Saturday, Feb 23 and ends at nightfall on Feb 24. Over 2436 years ago in Ancient Persia a man named Hamon had a plot to destroy and annihilate all the Jewish people, young and old, infants and women in a single day. The holiday of Purim commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people from Ancient Persia. It is observed by public readings of the Megillah also known as the Scroll of Esther, to recount the story of the Purim miracle, sending food gifts to …

Over 21 centuries ago, Jerusalem was ruled by the Syrian-Greeks who sought to forcefully hellenize the people of Israel. Against all odds, a small band of faithful Jews defeated this mighty army and drove the Greeks from the land, reclaiming the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. They sought to light the Temple's menorah which is a seven branch candleabrum but they found only a small amount of oil, enough for one day. But a miracle happened and that oil lasted for 8 days. To commemorate this miracle, we celebrate Chanukah, the Festival of Lights. Chanukah begins on the 25th day of the Jewish month of Kislev, Dec 8 and is celebrated for eight days. On the first night, we kindle one light plus the shamash. The shamash is used to light the other …

Tuesday, January 10, 2012
By Dr. Rebecca Housel The Canton Chai Center, founded and run by Rabbi Mendy Horowitz and his wife, Rivka, helped commemorate the ten-year anniversary of 9-11 by creating a new Senior Buddy Program, matching younger program-volunteers with seniors. Since its inception, the program has helped local seniors maintain strong social connections, something medicine touts as necessary to a longer, healthier life. Volunteers call their senior buddies every Shabbat, to wish them well and check in. Other volunteers work on baking fresh challah bread, a …
