1. On this day in 1938, Orson Welles panicked a nation with broadcast of "War of the Worlds". An episode of the American radio drama anthology series The Mercury Theatre on the Air. It was performed as a Halloween episode of the series and aired over the Columbia Broadcasting System radio network. It was directed and narrated by actor and future filmmaker Orson Welles, the episode was an adaptation of H. G. Wells' novel The War of the Worlds (1898). In the days following the adaptation, however, there was widespread outrage and panic by certain listeners, who had believed the events described in the program were real. 2. 1. This day in history October 29, 1929: The Stock Market Crash on Black Tuesday on the New York Stock Exchange. Billions of dollars were lost wiping out thousands of investors. Stock tickers ran hours behind because the machinery could not handle the tremendous volume of trading. Partly due to the crash America and the rest of the industrialized world spiraled downward into the Great Depression of the 1930's.
