Early Release Day for Canton Today, School Committee to Meet Tonight

Canton School Committee to Discuss FY14 Budget Thursday Night

Discussions around the Fiscal Year 14 Budget as well as Canton school district policy udpates are among the items on tonight's Canton School Committee meeting agenda.  The School Committee, which meets at 6:45 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 7 in the Distance Learning Lab at Canton High School, will also give a first reading of the 2013-2014 School Calendar on the agenda. 5 Things You Need to Know: Wednesday, Aug. 29: School Committee to meet, Chorus Day set for Thursday

The Canton School Committee will be meeting Thursday night at Canton High School.

  1. Before school starts Sept. 5, the Canton School Committee will be meeting Thursday, Aug. 30 at the CHS Distance Learning Lab. The committee will be looking at the schools' wellness plan, which can be reviewed at http://www.cantonma.org/pages/CantonPublicSchools/Departments/HealthServices/Wellness_Policy_Resources 2. Highlights from the Canton School Committee: Breakfast, Healthcare and Student Population

The Canton School Committee met Monday night.

A healthy breakfast and more sleep could be in store for Canton students. At Monday night's Canton School Committee meeting, the committee members heard presentations from Martha Lawless on food services and Nurse Leader Janet Donnelly. The committee also discussed delaying the start time for the high school. Lawless gave a presentation on the need to add a student breakfast program to Canton public schools. Citing recent studies, Lawless said school breakfast allows students to learn better, be more focused and have less behavior management issues. The goal is to add a school breakfast program to all the schools this year, she said. However, she noted there is a need for more planning. She said this year, there are 400 students eligible …

Canton Teachers Associaton Speaks Out At School Committee Meeting

Protesting proposed changes to step and salary rates for Canton Public School teachers.

It was standing room only at the Canton School Committee meeting Thursday night. Canton public school teachers packed the room, bearing colorful signs displaying their credentials, as several teachers and the president of the CTA Pat Phalan took to the microphone to present their views on recent contract negotiations. Although listed on the School Committee Agenda as "anticipated comments from the CTA," under public comments/questions, the committee members seemed surprised by the vast number of teachers who filled the room and spoke. The teachers who spoke all addressed concerns about changing the steps/salary increases for Canton Public School teachers. Canton School Committee Highlights

Changes to preschool, an upcoming half-day for students and scholarships for seniors.

There will be more slots available for preschoolers in Canton this coming school year. The School Committee approved an increase in the number of slots for incoming students and also restored the old fee of $2,000 for half-day preschool for the year, according to School Committee Chair Reuki Schutt. Canton Preschool at the Early Childhood Center offers programs for children ages three to five. “We take a mix of special needs students and model students,” Schutt said. “It’s a great experience for everybody.”  The role model students take what they have learned and teach the other students, which reinforces learning, the chair stated. Middle School Basketball Coming to Canton This Year

School Committee approves a team for middle school this season.

Middle school students will be able to try out for the new Galvin Middle School basketball team this season. At last week's School Committee meeting, members approved Middle School Athletics Coordinator Bill Bendell's proposal. The proposal moved money that had been budgeted for after-school activities to the new after-school sport. The proposal created a middle school boys and middle school girls interscholastic basketball team. Basketball players will be charged a $100 fee to cover costs, Bendell said. The team will include 12 boys and 12 girls, and try-outs will be held, he said.
