Canton School Officials Provide Flu-Prevention Resources

Looking to keep your kids from getting sick with flu this year? Here's how to prevent spread of influenza in Canton's schools.

Blue Hills Regional Now Enrolling for Fall 2012 Classes

Students interested in taking classes at the Canton-based school can view options through the Fall 2012 Continuing Education catalog.

Five Things You Need to Know: Thursday August 23: Canton Back-to School News

The first day of school for Canton grades 1-12 will be Wednesday, Sept. 5.

  1. Ninth grade orientation will take place Monday, Aug. 27, at Canton High School gymnasium at 8 a.m., followed by a new student and transfer student orientation grades 10-12 at 10 a.m. 2. The Canton School Committee will be meeting Thursday, Aug. 30 in the Canton High Distance Learning Lab. 3. The first day for teachers, not students, will be Tuesday, Sept. 4. 4. The first day of school for Canton students 1-12 will be Wednesday, Sept. 5, and the first day of kindergarten will Thursday, Sept. 6. 5. Another bright sunny day, according to weather.com., as temperatures are expected to have a high of 86 under mostly sunny skies. It was 64 at night.

Rep. William C. Galvin Welcomes Canton School Children to the State House

Galvin Middle School children perform on the Grant Staircase of the State House.

Canton’s Galvin Middle School 8th grade chorus performed recently at the State House on the historic building’s Grand Staircase.  John Russell, the chorus director, put together a half hour set that entertained members of the Legislature, staff, tourists and Canton parents.  Songs included “Africa” and the patriotic “Song for Unsung Heroes." Canton Youths Inducted into The National Honor Society

Several Canton youths were inducted into the NHS at BC High.

Several Canton residents earned top honors at Boston College High School. Kevin J. Counterman, Angelo J. DeNofrio, Matthew C. McDonough, Conor V. Shea and Loius S. Titus of Canton were among the 119 seniors and juniors inducted into the Robert J. Fulton, S.J. Chapter of the National Honor Society. Thes students were inducted at an evening ceremony January 11 at Boston College High School’s Fahey-Hunter Commons. The evening began with a processional march by the BC High Concert Band, followed by an invocation by Michael McGonagle ’70, Vice principal of Ignatian Mission and Identity. The band played the National Anthem, which was followed by the Welcoming Address by Matthew Doyle ‘12 of Dorchester, President of the National Honor Society. …

Canton School District Keeping Injured Students in Thoughts, Prayers

Superintendent of Schools Jeff Granatino said that four of the students have been released from the hospital.

After a Friday evening crash that injured six Canton High School Students, the school district is coming together for support. "We're all hoping (the students) will have a speedy recovery," Superintendent of Schools Jeff Granatino told Patch this evening. Four of the six students involved in the crash have been sent home from the hospital, he said. Although, Granatino said he did not know which hospital the students are being treated at or information on their injuries. The crash happened at about 6:00 p.m. Friday evening on York Street, and was not school related, Granatino said. The crisis team has been notified and is preparing to work with students, if necessary, on Monday, he said. The district is "putting together support in place …

Norfolk County DA Warns Local Schools of Ongoing Facebook Fraud

An area student has been the victim of an Internet crime on Facebook, DA Michael Morrissey reported recently.

Parents, educators and local police should be wary of students falling into a Facebook trap by someone who created a fake profile posing as a teenage girl, Norfolk County District Attorney Michael Morrissey said in a letter sent to all Norfolk County school districts, including Canton. An area student – Morrissey did not specify which town – recently friended someone appearing on Facebook as "Sarah John," whose photo made her appear to be a teenager and who has yet to be identified. "After a few months as a passive friend, this Sarah John initiated conversations that led to the student sharing personal information," Morrissey wrote in the letter. "Sarah John is now trying to extort money from the student and has threatened to make this …

"Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me." This is a saying I've grown up with my whole life, but I'd beg to differ. Can words never hurt a person? Canton's Courtland Priest will compete for chance to advance to National Spelling Bee.

Canton’s Courtland Priest will compete at the 2012 Comcast South Shore Regional Spelling Bee.
