St. John's To Celebrate 150th Anniversary on Sunday

All are welcome to attend a special Mass at 11:30am on June 5 in Canton.

Going strong for 150 years calls for a celebration. St. John the Evangelist Church of Canton is celebrating its 150 Anniversary on Sunday, June 5.  All members of the community are warmly welcomed to attend the 11:30 a.m. Mass, which will be officiated by Cardinal Sean O’Malley. A formal reception will be held immediately after the Mass. St. John’s Parish has much to celebrate, as building Catholic roots in Canton took much perseverance.  In the mid-1800s, a large influx of mainly Irish Catholics began to immigrate to the South Shore and Boston. While Boston more quickly developed parishes, the outskirts of Boston, such as Quincy, had to depend on missionaries to come down from Boston to officiate weekly Masses, according to the St. John's…

Canton Church's Poetry and Spirituality Group Has Soul

Community members gather to discuss prose and spirituality at First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church in Canton.

Mary Oliver, Giacomo Leopardi, May Sarton and Emily Dickenson are but a few of the inspired poets whose works are discussed at the Poetry and Spirituality Group at First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church in Canton. The group was just recently formed in November of 2010. Poems of all themes and genres are shared during the hour-long meeting; group leader Louise LaFontaine generally begins the time by sharing a poem, about which those in attendance then provide comments, thoughts and memories. Mod Rock Meets God Rock at St. Gerard's Church Winter Wonderland Concert

A special evening of holiday music at St. Gerard's showcased local talent, a Celtic Harpist and an Afro-Cuban Jazz band.

St. Gerard's Church held a transformative night of music on Friday, turning the altar into an intimate stage for the soulful bands and artists who graced it. For the second year in a row, the Church's Music Director Greg Pare put together a wonderfully diverse lineup of musicians, who played to a pew-packed church.  While the event took place on the stage of the church, the ambiance was decidedly that of an intimate club performance with a well designed set, an array of quality instruments and musicians. Stage lighting bathed each band in color, while Harpist and Singer Aine Minogue entertained by candlelight. The opening set featured Canton teens: Kevin O'Brien on bass, Eddie McCabe on drums, John Nunez on piano and Kevin Hawley on conga …

Holistic Health Fair at Canton Spiritualist Church

Unique health fair celebrates the diverse talents of New England crafters.

The Canton Spiritualist Church sponsored their bi-annual Holistic Health Fair on Saturday. The event is "a nice, family-oriented time for people to learn about alternative, holistic health," Reverend Patricia Bertucci said.   A wide variety of vendors showcased their items and services at the event, traveling from as far as New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Martha's Vineyard to attend.  While gemstones are prized by many for their intrinsic beauty, vendors Lisa and Dianne Ducharme of Rhode Island suggest thinking about gemstones as having a magical quality, in that they may seem to bring about the wishes that the wearer hopes for.  For example, they suggest wearing a rose quartz necklace to find and keep love.  Furthermore, according to …
