State awards the town a water conservation grant.
Turn off the running water when you brush your teeth. Install a water efficient washer machine or showerhead--simple steps folks can take to do their part to conserve water. The town of Canton wants all residents to pitch in, and the state has boosted the town's conservation efforts with funds from the 2011 Water Conservation Grant Program. On Tuesday, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) announced it would be awarding a total of $850,000 in grants to 25 projects in several towns across the state. Canton is one of those chosen to receive funds. The goal is "to reduce drinking water losses through local water conservation programs," according to the MassDEP. Canton applied for the state grant, which is a …

Selectmen discussed snow budget at Tuesday night's meeting.
Those 25 inches of white stuff have cost Canton. The town's $184,700 snow budget was spent after cleaning up one snow storm and one blizzard. Towns throughout the Commonwealth typically go over their allotted snow budget, according to Town Administrator William Friel. Snow cleanup is one of two budget items that towns can approve, and then allot more money for if a town needs to, since snow removal is a public safety issue, he noted. Canton has $184,700 budgeted for the year for snow removal, which includes labor, equipment and supplies. To date, the town has spent $151,000 on equipment and labor and has ordered an additional $94,000 worth of salt and sand, Friel said at Tuesday's Board of Selectmen meeting. "We are (about) $61,000 in …

Canton Police, Fire and DPW all out in force during the storm.
Mother Nature pounded the area with about 15 inches of the white stuff and Canton crews kept busy all night responding to the storm. With 32 Department of Public Works drivers and sanders on, the DPW is still working on cleaning up the town post-blizzard. "This is the primary reason these guys exist--to fight storms," Daniel Teague, Operations Manager of the Canton DPW said from his site's headquarters on Bolivar Street yesterday. "There's nobody that can do it like they do it." The Canton Police Department was "busy all night with (disabled motor vehicles) and alarm calls," Canton Police Chief Kenneth Berkowitz said today. " We had a few accidents, five tops, and it seems like most people stayed home and that helped." The winter …

Canton Department of Public Works is ready to battle the white stuff.
Who needs sleep? Apparently not the 32 snowplow drivers and sanders who are battling the blizzard for the town of Canton. Out for 30 to 35 hours straight, "these guys are animals," Daniel Teague, Operations Manager of the Canton DPW said from his site's headquarters on Bolivar Street. "These guys would stand up to any military unit." The crew, which kicked off their day at 9:00 a.m. today, will work straight through the storm, taking an hour cat nap if possible, Teague said. "When they're done, they're zombies and they just go home and sleep." Storms are what keeps his crew motivated. "This is the primary reason these guys exist--to fight storms," Teague said Sunday. "There's nobody that can do it like they do it." The cost of a storm …
Town is getting prepped for the blizzard today.
The Town of Canton is ready for the snow. The Department of Public Works has been working since 8:00 this morning to gear up for the big storm, while Canton's Emergency Management Team met at noon and has its storm plans in place. Governor Deval Patrick declared a state of emergency at 12:10 p.m. today due to the anticipated "widespread heavy snowfall, periods of zero visibility, high winds, power outages, coastal flooding, and beach erosion," the governor's office said in a press release. The State of Emergency will allow the governor to call in the National Guard to assist with the potential storm impact on the Bay State. However, there was no sign of panic before the blizzard in Canton this morning and afternoon, besides at the …
