Fireworks Safety Tips for This 4th of July

A few ways to safely enjoy fireworks this 4th of July.

For many, July 4th and fireworks go hand-in-hand. However, each year, fire officials warn that, when amateurs and explosives are involved, Fourth of July fireworks very easily leave someone handless – or worse. State Fire Marshal Stephen Coan's website provides more than a dozen links to presentations and information detailing the dangers and illegality of fireworks. According to data on a report titled “Leave Fireworks to Pros,” from 2002 to 2011, there were 804 major fire and explosion incidents involving illegal fireworks reported in Massachusetts, which caused one civilian death, 18 civilian injuries, four fire service injuries and an estimated $2.5 million loss. Except by licensed professionals, the use of fireworks is illegal in …

Canton Fireworks Delayed Due to Safety Concerns

Monday night's fireworks celebration had a 25-minute delay.

Canton's Fourth of July fireworks had a delay last night due to safety concerns. The Canton Fire Department had to stop the festivities because crowds were too close to the show, and several audience members left before the grand finale. "The audience on the upper baseball field was being exposed to falling debris," Canton Fire Chief Charles Doody said. "I made the decision to stop the show until they could be relocated to a safer location on the lower field." With 200 spectators at the Galvin Middle School having to be moved, there was a 25-minute pause in the fireworks show. After the delay, the fireworks "resumed and were completed safely," Doody said. The chief said it was a tough decision to make and "some people left but I could not …

The Canton Police / fire department should invest in a bullhorn. They had absolutely no means of communicating with the crowd except by hollering. Fancy 100k command center on hand (useless, your tax dollars at work) when a $100 bullhorn would have kept the public informed of situation.   more ›

Photo Gallery: Canton Celebrates the Fourth

Canton's Fourth of July celebration at Galvin Middle School included lots of activities for kids, a live concert and a fireworks show.

The Canton Fireworks went off with a bang and a sparkle Monday night, despite a 20 minute delay, entertaining the spectators on the hot independence day. Prior to the fireworks show at the Galvin Middle School, there were a variety of games, bounce houses, small train rides, and other activities for children. The Reminisants entertained the crowd with oldies tunes, leading up to the big fireworks finale, and got the kids dancing.

Independence Day Through a Child's Eyes

Building Fourth of July traditions and memories with your family is something you will remember for a lifetime.

Like most families, we spent the Fourth of July holiday at a cookout, letting the kids run amok outside, and capping off the evening with the fireworks celebration. I have always been fond of this holiday because it showcases everything that means summertime to me. Between spending a relaxing day with family and friends, grilling hamburgers and hotdogs, watching kids play in the pool, and waving red, white and blue flags, it pretty much sums up my vision of summer. So it is somewhat surprising that given my affinity for this holiday, this is the first year we have done the whole fireworks thing with the kids. The last few years, I was more concerned with them being afraid of the loud noises and being out so late at night to see the show, …

Canton Getting Ready for the Fourth of July

Fireworks, activities to be held for the July 4 celebration this year.

The town is getting ready for summer. The Canton Recreation Department is prepping for Canton's Fourth of July celebration. At last week's Board of Selectmen meeting, Recreation Director Jeff Kaylor and Recreation Commission Member Larry Bogue presented an update to the board on the plans. The annual Fourth of July Celebration will kick off with a five-mile road race, Kaylor said. This will be the 38th year for the race, he said. Past races have attracted about 150 runners. The festivities will continue on July 4, 2011 from 5:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. at the Galvin Middle School. The fireworks will go off at 9:00 p.m. and last about 30 minutes. The celebration will include tons of activities for kids, including concession stands, games, hay …

Welcome Back Fourth of July

Fireworks on tap for the summer celebration in Canton this year.

Welcome back, Fourth of July fireworks. The Canton Board of Selectmen made it official and voted to bring back the Canton tradition this summer.  At Tuesday’s meeting the board voted unanimously to host the fireworks display this year. The downside is that the town cannot afford to hold the Fourth festivities in addition to the summer block party. Unfortunately, the block party was axed for this year. Recreation Commission Chairman Larry Bogue said the fourth of July is an easier event to control for the department. The town can “control costs by cutting back on fireworks,” he told the board. Recreation Director Jeff Kaylor said the one-day block party that had been held in town for the past ten years is expensive to throw and the costs …

I much prefer the fireworks. Canton once had a reputation for hosting the best fireworks in the area. They are also a draw to the carnival, which also helps raise money for Canton. The block party was good the 1st year or so, but I think that it has gone downhill every year since. I've also seen a large increase in private fireworks displays in the cul-de-sacs around town due to the absence of …   more ›
