While your thinking of others this holiday season, make sure you're also keeping the planet in mind.
Before you buy another roll of gift wrap and leave those holiday lights on all night, the city's Department of Environmental Affairs is asking you to have a waste-free holiday this year. According to the Newton Environmental Affairs website, the holiday season is the most wasteful time of the year. You can prevent this, though, with home made gifts, energy-conscious Christmas lights and alternative ways to wrap presents. Blue laws prohibit retailers from opening before midnight on Black Friday.
Black Friday is starting earlier than ever, as some national retailers have announced they will open the night of Thanksgiving, Thursday, Nov. 22. However, here in Massachusetts, state blue laws prohibit stores from opening until midnight, according to a report by the Boston Globe. Current blue laws prohibit retailers in the state from opening on Thanksgiving, thus preventing them from getting an early start on Black Friday sales, according to the Globe article. Some exceptions are restaurants, health care facilities and gas stations. Shaw’s Supermarkets® kicked-off its Spirit of Giving Food Drive this week, encouraging customers to give back to those in need this holiday season. The program allows shoppers to purchase pre-assembled food bags at Shaw’s locations that will then be donated to local hunger relief partners and food banks. From now through December 18, Shaw’s customers can purchase pre-assembled bags that contain much-needed holiday food items ranging from green beans to tomato sauce for $5, $10 or $15. Once purchased, the pre-assembled bags will be placed in a designated drop bin and Shaw’s stores will deliver them to a local food partner.
