Canton Falls in OT Heartbreaker, 5-4, to Host Belmont

Defeat ends great campaign for young Bulldog squad.

Nearly a minute after Belmont's Alexandra Cellucci's goal in sudden-death overtime gave the Belmont High School Marauder's a thrilling 5-4 victory over the Canton High Bulldogs Wednesday, Feb. 29, Bulldog's sophomore goaltender Emily Buckleysat slumped in her net as the Belmont team celebrated on their home ice.  Buckley's disappointment letting in the winning goal was evident as several teammates were needed to prop her and skate her back to the bench. Yet as Canton's young head coach Kelly Rider said after the game, no one was stopping that shot. "It was the perfect shot," said Rider. Cellucci's goal, coming off a pin-point pass from linemate senior Caroline McCarthy on a two-on-one breakout, sends fifth-ranked Belmont to the …

OA Hockey Earns Another Hard-Fought Upset Over Canton

In first meeting since last year's Div 2 South Sectionals, OA earns another upset over perennial Hock power Canton.

With revenge in mind after last year’s loss to Oliver Ames in the Division 2 South quarterfinals, the Canton High School hockey team was looking to retain its status as favorites in the Davenport Division That revenge didn't come to fruition, however, as OA handed Canton its first loss of the 2011-12 season with a 2-1 victory Wednesday night at ASIAF Rink in Brockton. OA is now 2-2 on the season (1-1 Hockomock League, 1-0 Davenport) while Canton drops to 3-1 (0-1 league/Davenport). “They came out to get us back and it just didn’t work out [for them],” said first-year OA Coach Jim Sullivan. “That’s a very good team they have and it was a great win for our program.” OA was undoubtedly the better team, but they also benefited from puck luck …

Oliver Ames Hockey Upsets Canton in Overtime to Advance in State Tournament

OA's Andrew Taylor won the game for the Tigers on an overtime goal, 2-1.

Hockey is unique. Like all sports it takes a perfect combination of tactics, diligence and tremendous skill to succeed. But no matter how much one practices, prepares and strategizes for a game, there is always a potential that the outcome will be decided by one lucky (or unlucky) bounce.  Such was the case Saturday afternoon in Bourne, where the seventh seeded Oliver Ames Tigers were able to upset the second seeded Canton Bulldogs with a chance overtime goal in an extremely competitive MIAA Division II South Sectional quarterfinal matchup. OA’s Andrew Taylor scored the goal to defeat the Bulldogs 2-1. The game was about as close as they come.  “It was really back and forth the whole game, each side won a period,” said Tiger Head Coach Dan…

Canton Boys Ice Hockey: Bulldogs Beat Melrose 7-4

Canton High cinched a win today against Melrose.

Although, the Canton High School Boys Hockey team had already clinched a Division-2 South Sectional State Tournament berth, the Hockomock League Cup Classic Crown and a Davenport (small schools) Division Title, the Bulldogs still felt that they needed a win in their last regular season game, hosting Melrose at Metropolis Rink Friday afternoon. A balanced offensive effort by Canton led to a 7-4 victory over the Red Raiders, from the tough Middlesex League. With the victory, Canton enters the post-season with a 15-3-2 overall record, gains at least a #2 seed, and continues to ride momentum into March Madness. “This game was still important for us because we needed to keep playing well and get everyone involved (six different goal scorers),” …

Canton Boys Ice Hockey: Canton Edges Mansfield on the Ice in Hockomock Classic

Hornets come up short against Davenport League Champs, 3-2.

A third game anyone? Both the Canton and Mansfield High boys ice hockey teams will take a third meeting in the Division 2 South tournament. “They have the top spot on one side locked up,” said Canton High Head Coach Brian Shulman. “We’re going to be on the other side, so we would meet far along in the tournament, probably the South finals. There was a lot of talk in the end of the game line that we will see you in the tournament.” Canton got a late goal from Greg Boyd to defeat Mansfield, 3-2, in the first Hockomock League Classic at the Canton Rink. The Hornets finished the regular season with a 17-2-1 record and will now wait for the tournament pairings. Oh yeah, those two losses were to the Bulldogs. “We had to play them twice in this …

Canton Boys Ice Hockey Team Beats Stoughton in Close Game

Stoughton trailed Canton 4-0 in the third period, before scoring two unanswered goals. But, the Black Knights were unable to complete the comeback, falling to their Davenport Division rivals Monday night.

Two teams heading in different directions faced off in a Hockomock League matchup, Monday night, as Stoughton hosted Canton High and lost 4-2 at the Asiaf Rink in Brockton, in a contest that was postponed from its original February 2 date. Canton defeated Stoughton, 5-3, at home earlier in the season in a very tough matchup, and this time around Stoughton fell just short again. “We’re going through a tough stretch, but I have nothing but praise for our team with this effort and in our last few games,” said Stoughton Coach Dan Mark. “All three lines and our defense played very well and our goaltending kept us in the game. We made a really good showing against a very strong team.” The Bulldogs, winners of the Hockomock League’s Davenport (…

Canton Boys Ice Hockey Out Shot In Road Loss

The Bulldogs lost 3-1 to host Lincoln-Sudbury on Wednesday.

Out-shot and outscored, the Bulldogs boys hockey team was unable to beat host Lincoln-Sudbury on Wednesday Putting half as many shots on goal as its opponent, Canton lost 3-1 to host L-S at New England Sports Center in Marlborough. “They out worked us, out hustled us, and out smarted us,” said Canton Coach Brian Shuman. “I thought that our guys would show a little more fire and energy. Overall we played a team that had a lot more heart tonight.” Three total goals within three minutes in the first period would decide the game. With the score tied at zero, L-S's Nate Gyory manged to slap in a center ice goal off a front of the net screen from teammate Devin Patel (both juniors). Cutting behind the net, Warriors sophomore David Hall slipped …

Canton Steals Victory From OA Hockey

Despite out-playing Canton through the first two periods on Saturday, OA fell victim to Canton in the final stanza in 4-2 loss.

Sometimes in sports the better team does not always come away victorious. The Oliver Ames hockey team proved that theory to be true against perennial Hockomock League power Canton High School in its 4-2 loss Saturday afternoon at ASIAF rink in Brockton. Throughout the first two periods, the Tigers had the better of the chances despite some penalties, which also played a huge part in the third period. At the end of the second period, OA captain Andrew Taylor responded to one of Canton’s three power play goals – the first came from JC Marcone at 11:25 of the same period – when he slid the puck past Canton goalie Nick Maples off a feed from Dylan Burns (who scored earlier in the period) to give the team a 2-1 lead heading into the locker room…
