Canton's Got Talent

A teacher talent show at Canton High School, sponsored by Music Counts, was a fun-filled evening full of surprises.

The biggest names in the Canton Public School’s faculty of musical legends were on the big stage at the Canton High School Auditorium on Friday night taking part in the annual Canton's Got Talent fundraiser. The event raises funds for Canton Public Schools’ after-school music ensembles. The nine acts, including the 2009 “All Around Favorite” winners, the Galvin Middle School Barber Shop Quartet, all put on stellar performances in front of a packed auditorium.  Fans from the Luce, Kennedy, Hansen, Galvin and High School represented their schools en masse. Cheers and applause of “Beetle-mania proportions” erupted for each act.  The suspense was high throughout the evening, as the judges and audience had no clue as to the nature of each act’s…

The Health Patch

A "Heart"y Valentine's Day

This month, the American Heart Association urges Americans to make some life choices that have a big impact on your risk for heart disease.

February is American Heart Month, according to the American Heart Association (AHA.) While the focus for many Americans is typically on the red valentine hearts associated with Valentine’s Day, the American Heart Association is actively urging all Americans to focus on their cardiovascular health this month. It is unfortunate that this is the shortest month of the year, as heart disease is a year-round killer of Americans of all races, genders and ages. Shockingly, according to the American Heart Association, 90% of American women have at least one risk factor for developing heart disease.  Indeed, one out of three adults in the United States has high blood pressure, which increases the risk of heart attack and stroke.  Do you know your …

Photo Gallery: Spring Out of the Snow

A visit to a local florist is a sure way to remember that spring is on the way, regardless of the weather forecast.

Not many flowers are blooming outdoors this time of year–at least not in Canton.  However, step inside a local florist shop and you will be whisked away into a season of sun, beautiful blooms and cheerful arrangements. Enough to snap you out of your snow-coma for a few minutes, at least. And just in time for Valentine's Day! Canton Flowers By Ami, located at 1 Washington Street, allowed a Patch photogragher to preview some beautiful flowers available for Valentine's Day, or any time you need cheering up this winter.

Snow-Filled Season for Blue Hills Ski Resort

Blue Hills Ski Resort offers programs and lessons geared towards kids, families and the local crowd.

Gary Vanasse knows a thing or two about the Blue Hills Ski Resort. He started working there as a high school student in 1977, when the Egon and Zimmerman Ski-School was running the slopes. Vanasse began working at Blue Hills full time as a college graduate in 1982, and is currently the assistant general manager.  “I’m a typical New Englander," he said. "I love skiing in cold, hard weather….nothing is more fun for me than skiing in a big snow-storm." He described the way in which the Blue Hills Ski Resort appeals to a variety of skiers.  It appeals to the “hearty skiers” like himself, the “sun-lovers” who come to enjoy the slopes on sunny days and the “spring skiers” who love to hit the slopes on warmer days when the snow is slushier and …

Canton-Based Cyber Commmunity Links Patients in Need with Potential Donors

Matchingdonors.com profiles potential organ recipients, letting potential donors pick who they give the "gift of life" to.

In a world where everyone seems to have an internet profile, one website stands apart from the rest. Matchingdonors.com, a Canton-based website, allows people with kidney disease, cancer and other illnesses to post pictures, blood types and requests for organ donation. Altruistic, living donors are able to log-on to the website and find a potential recipient, with the right blood type, that they would like to donate a kidney, liver section or bone marrow to.   The company was created in the aftermath of local Dentist Paul Dooley’s father’s death.  Dooley watched his father, who suffered from kidney failure, slowly die before getting to the top of the cadaver kidney list. He collaborated with his best friend, a medical doctor named Jeremiah…
