Feel-good story of the day: Everyone wins in pick-up game of hoops.
Cameron Miller, 18, happens to have cerebral palsy. He also happens to attend Massachusetts Hospital School in Canton, Mass., where he plays on the school's wheelchair basketball team. After watching Cameron's team practice every week, Cameron's father John Miller of Weymouth, a supervisor for Sullivan Tire, was moved to action. He knew that the team struggled to find opponents, which makes it hard to schedule games. So to boost morale for the school's team and bring awareness to MHS's program, Miller put the call out, and a dozen Sullivan Tire employees reponded, including Mike Fitzgibbons of Nashua. On March 14, after playing two intense and totally fun 20-minute halves, MHS prevailed, beating Sullivan Tires team soundly, 18-4. “These …

Canton firefighters put out a fire at the Canton school last week. The fire injured one employee.
Canton Firefighters responded to a blaze in the power plant at the Mass Hospital School on Wednesday. The fire, which was in the ductwork of the school's power plant, resulted in one employee injury, according to Canton Fire Chief Charles Doody. A school employee had gone to investigate the access panel by climbing a ladder. The employee "received second degree burns to his arms when he opened an access panel and the fire exited the duct, knocking him off the ladder he was on, from about 12 feet," Doody said. "He also sustained a broken ankle from the fall." It took Canton firefighters three hours to find the "hidden fire, access it and extinguish it," according to the fire chief. Crews had to create two holes to get to the blaze. Six …

If your New Year's resolutions include volunteering in your community, you could consider driving a senior to a doctor's appointment, cooking for the Medical Reserve Corps, raking at Mass Audobon, or helping the Garden Club.
If your New Year's Resolutions include donating time, talent or funds to a non-profit organization, staying local may be the way to go. You could consider driving an elderly patient to a medical appointment through the Council on Aging, moving cots and supplies for the Medical Reserve Corps, raking leaves at Massachusetts Audubon, or helping the Garden Club maintain the town's "Welcome to Canton" flower boxes. Carol Munson grew up in Canton, raised a family in Canton and now volunteers in the town she loves where opportunities abound for all ages and abilities. "I was born in Canton so Canton means a lot to me…my roots are here," said Munson, who is a member of the Canton Garden Club where she works to beautify the streets of Canton for …
