Traffic Enforcement Ramps Up During Holiday Season

Troopers from all over New England want to help local drivers stay safe and prevent crashes during the holiday season.

The holidays are upon us, and many residents will be traveling this week to see family and friends all across New England.  State Police are doing their part to help ensure these visits don't end in tragedy because of impaired or distracted driving. The Massachusetts State Police joined forces with other New England State Police divisions at headquarters in Framingham to explain their C.A.R.E program. Increased patrols this week will be cracking down on impaired/drunk driving, texting while driving and seatbelt law violations, among other things. State Police to Hold Sobriety Checkpoint in Norfolk County Friday

A routine sobriety checkpoint for drivers in Norfolk County is slated for Friday and Saturday.

Drivers in the Norfolk County area should take note that Massachusetts State Police will hold a sobriety checkpoint Friday night into Saturday, Nov. 9 and 10, according to an announcement from Colonel Timothy P. Alben, Superintendent of the Massachusetts State Police. "The purpose is to further educate the motoring public and strengthen the public’s awareness to the need of detecting and removing those motorists who operate under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs from the roadways," The statement reads. Truck Rollover Reported on Rte. 93, Ramp Closed 2-3 Hours

The incident occurred shortly before 11:30 a.m. Thursday.

Massachusetts State Police units are on-scene of a tractor-trailer rollover on the ramp from Rte. 138 northbound to Rte. I-93 southbound in Canton, according to a statement from MSP on Thursday morning.  The ramp is expected to be closed for at last for two to three hours. The driver involved in the rollover has suffered injuries, the extent of which were uncertain Thursday morning, according to State Police. There is a small diesel fuel leak, as well. Canton Fire and EMS crews are also on scene. Canton Patch will provide more information as it becomes available.

State Trooper Released From Hospital After Cruiser Struck on I-95 in Canton

A state police cruiser was struck by a pickup truck early this morning on 95, injuring a state trooper.

The driver of a pickup truck that struck a state police cruiser early Wednesday morning on Rte. I-95 in Canton will be cited for operating to endanger and marked lanes violation, according to a statement from the Massachusetts State Police Wednesday.  Trooper Kenneth Downey, 27, who is assigned to Troop H, was released from Boston Medical Center after examination and tests Wednesday morning. Downey had to be extricated from his vehicle by Canton firefighters after the accident Wednesday, according to state police.  "He was conscious and alert but was in pain and was transported by EMS to Boston Medical Center for examination," the release states. State Police Trooper Relieved of Duty Following OUI Arrest in Stoughton

Stoughton Police arrested Brian Simpkins, a 39-year-old Massachusetts State Police trooper, in the parking lot of the Stoughton Wendy's for operating under the influence (2nd offense) in the early morning hours of September 21.

The following is adapted from a press release from David Procopio, Spokesperson for the Massachusetts State Police: The Massachusetts State Police relieved Trooper Brian Simpkins of duty Friday morning following his arrest in the overnight hours by Stoughton Police for operating under the influence and violation of the open container law. Simpkins, 39, of Canton, was ordered held in lieu of $1,000 cash bail at his arraignment Friday morning in Stoughton District Court. Simpkins was found sleeping in his personal car, which was running, in the parking lot of the Wendy's restaurant on Washington Street in Stoughton at approximately 2:10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 21. Passenger Van Involved in Accident on I-93

Some injuries were reported in the incident, but are thought to be minor.

A van carrying 10 passengers was involved in an accident on I-93 Tuesday evening, according to unconfirmed reports.  Initial reports indicate the majority of passengers have injuries, though they are thought to be minor injuries. Massachusetts State Police troopers and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene Tuesday night. Canton Patch will provide more information as it becomes available.

Six More Drunk Drivers Arrested in Fourth Weekend of Increased Patrol on Routes 24/195

Massachusetts State Police Troopers also made 12 other arrests and issued five criminal summons in week 4 of the patrol surge on Routes 24/195.

The following is adapted from a press release from the Massachusetts State Police: Massachusetts State Police from Troop D arrested six more drunk drivers last Friday and Saturday night on the fourth weekend of the Routes 24/195 patrol surge. Troopers made 12 other arrests and issued five criminal summons. Additionally, troopers wrote 338 citations for motor vehicle violations on those highways during the targeted times this past weekend. The State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section also stopped 16 speeding trucks on Route 24 last week and conducted 23 commercial vehicle inspections. The truck team took two trucks out of service, one for faulty brakes and another because the driver had a suspended license. Truck team troopers …
