Free Coffee Offered at Highway Service Plazas Christmas Night

There will be free java served at the state's 18 travel plazas from 10 p.m. on Christmas night to 5 a.m. on Dec. 26.

One theory about how Santa gets all his work done is: Coffee. Lots of it. Even if you're not St. Nick, if you need to stay alert driving on Christmas night, the state's highway service areas are here to help. All 18 Department of Transportation service plazas will serve up free java from 10 p.m. on Dec. 25 to 5 a.m. on Dec. 26. The same offer applies on New Year's Eve. That's between 10 p.m. Dec. 31 and 5 a.m. Jan. 1 The free coffee is sponsored by McDonalds, Burger King and Gulf. Here is a list of all 18 service plazas in Massachusetts.

What's Open (or Not) on January 2

The New Year's Day holiday will be observed on Monday, January 2 this year.

The New Year's Day holiday will be observed on Monday, January 2, 2012.  Here's a run down of what's open/closed: All municipal, state and federal offices and facilities will be closed. This includes schools and the post office.  All MBTA buses and trains will running on a reduced weekend/holiday schedule.  Liquor stores: Open at the owner's discretion. Retail and convenience stores: Open at the owner's discretion.  Restaurants and bars: Most will be open, but call ahead. It's up to the owner.  Happy New Year!

Here is what is happening in and around Canton this weekend.

1. Check out the live Celtic music at the Irish Cultural Centre at 8:00 p.m. Saturday night. 2. Head to the ICC to participate in a Sit and Knit Group at 1:00 p.m. Sunday. 3. Take advantage of the snow and enjoy at day on the slopes at the Blue Hills Ski Area this weekend.  4. Attend service at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church. Bring a favorite poem or reading to share. 5. On Saturday afternoon, Blue Hills is offering "Free First Day" hikes around Hougton's Pond. Happy New Year!
