Party of the Year! Community Purim Celebration This Sunday in Canton

This annual community celebration is held at the Canton Public High, 900 Washington St. in Canton, @ 12:30 p.m.

“Purim in the Shtetl” is the theme for this year’s Purim celebration.  The event will feature delicious foods of the shtetl, Megillah Reading & Sideshow, Klezmer band, hamentashen, Masquerade for adults and children and prizes for all who come in costume. Families can visit the village baker, tailor, jeweler, and farm and participate in activities and crafts. The event is a community-wide program, and all are welcome to join, regardless of affiliation, background or place of residence. Free admission, Donations appreciated. What is the holiday of Purim?  The festival of Purim is celebrated every year on the 14th of the Hebrew month of Adar. A cookie with a fruit filling, how can you go wrong?

Purim, which begins next Saturday (Feb. 23) at sundown, is my favorite Jewish holiday. For children, it is a time to wear costumes and enjoy carnivals. For adults, it is a time for heavy drinking. You are actually required to get drunk on this holiday (how drunk is up for debate). It was a very popular holiday on my college campus. While religiously mandated binge drinking can lead to some memorable moments, my greatest memories of Purim come from making the holiday's official food—hamantaschen. These are triangle-shaped cookies with a filling made of fruit, poppy seeds or various other edible items. Here is a hamantaschen recipe from my grandfather Albert Friedman. Purim Celebrations in Canton

The Chai Jewish Center celebrated Purim.

The Chai Jewish Center in Canton hosted a Pre-Purim Kids Celebration on Sunday, March 3. With a hands on magic science show, Purim crafts, Hamentashen and costumes, everyone got into the Purim Spirit. Thursday is the Jewish holiday of Purim, and the center is hosting a second celebration. The festivities will begin at 5:00 p.m. at the Center, 580 Washington St., on March 8. Enjoy a delicious buffet dinner, Megillah Reading, Hamentashen, music, entertainment and activities for the kids.  Adults and kids are invited to come in costume and receive a Purim gift. The festivities will begin at 5:00 p.m. at the Center, 580 Washington St., on Thursday, March 8 at 5.00 p.m. Enjoy a delicious buffet dinner, Megillah Reading, Hamentashen, music, entertainment and activities for the kids.  Adults and kids are invited to come in costume and receive a Purim gift. Temple Beth David of the South Shore Presents Three Fun Purim Events

Join in on the fun starting on March 7 in Canton.

Canton's Temple Beth David is celebrating Purim with costumes, singing and dancing. The fun begins on Wednesday, March 7 at 7:00 p.m. with Temple Beth David’s Wacky Purim Service & Megillah Reading. Attendees read from the Book of Esther and sing crazy Purim songs with cantorial soloist Howard Worona. Come dressed in a costume (or pay the Tzedakah Tax, a donation for the needy, for those who do not come in costume.) There will be a costume Parade for the young and young-at-heart. Mishloach Manot (gifts of food) made by the Hebrew School will be found in and around the temple. This night of prayer will be accompanied by Hamentaschen (fruit-filled pastry) and laughter for all.
