Last Chance: School Committee Meeting Thursday!

The School Committee will meet Thursday at 7 pm at Canton High School.

At Thursday night's School Committee meeting, a report will be given on negotitations among other business. The Scool Committee will meet at 7 pm in the Distance Learning Lab at the Canton High School, after first meeting in executive session to discuss collective bargaining.

Updates from the Canton School Committee: Permanent Principal and a Budget

The next Canton School Committee meeting is February 2.

The Canton School Committee congratulated Peter Boucher on his new job. Boucher is now the permanent principal at the Hansen Elementary School. Superintendent of Schools Jeff Granatino told the committee he was "thrilled to announce he will be our principal. Congratulations, Pete." Boucher, who acted as interim principal since July, has been "running full speed since then," Granatino said. "He's done a terrific job." The new principal, who had previously been the Wellness Director for Canton Public Schools, thanked the committee. "I'm ecstatic," Boucher said. Canton Will Be Lighting Up With Solar Power

The town can now add the school buildings into the solar power mix.

Canton schools are taking a cue from the town's solar farm project and pitching in to save energy. Earlier this month, the Canton School Committee approved a solar project that will add solar panels to some school buildings' roofs and cut the district's electric bill. Representatives from Kearsarge Energy and Johnston Controls presented their solar proposal to the Canton School Committee. Through a federal grant, the company partners with nonprofits to add solar energy and cut spending on electric costs. Kearsarge will install solar panels on several of the schools' roofs. The solar panels seem to be a good thing within buildings, however, the closing of street lights within Canton & other towns offer no protection at all by being almost in total darkness. Intersections as well as the entire center are basically lit by the stores that are open. We seem to be falling too far back in time; any thought about the safety of darkness never mind walking around after dark.   more ›

Updates from the Canton School Committee: Field Trips, a TV Show and a Principal Search

Canton School Committee Sets $365,000 Budget for FY 2013

The Canton School Committee approved a capital budget for next year and long-term debt.

New desks at the Luce School, Mac computers, music stands and painting the school buildings are all included in the Fiscal Year 2013 Cash Capital Budget for Canton Public Schools. At Thursday's nearly four-hour long Canton School Committee meeting, the committee approved a cash capital budget totaling $365,000. After spending several weeks combing through budget requests and making cuts in order to come in on budget, the committee approved the final budget last week. The upcoming school year's budget includes $30,478 for weatherization of school buildings; $6,5550 for playground materials for all schools; $31,272 to replace Apple video work stations; $31,468 for furniture and fixtures for the JFK addition; $12,224 for replacing classroom …

Updates from the Canton School Committee: Cash Capital, CHS Parent Info Night

The school committee is meeting on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m.

The Canton School Committee will be reviewing capital budget requests for the upcoming fiscal year at Thursday’s meeting. According to Superintendent of Schools Jeff Granatino, the committee started to review the requests earlier this month. The committee has $365,000 in the budget for cash capital projects, but $1 million in requests, he said. Also at Thursday’s meeting, the committee will be discussing Annual Town Meeting warrant articles. The committee has until January 3 to submit them. The Canton School Committee is meeting Thursday, December 15, at 7:00 p.m. at Canton High School.

Updates from the Canton School Committee: Teacher Contract Reached, German Students Visiting Canton

The Canton School Committee approved a one-year teacher contract and greeted the group of German exchange students.

The Canton School Committee met last week and approved a new, one-year contract for Canton teachers and greeted students from the German exchange program. The committee, along with the chairman of the Board of Selectmen, unanimously approved the one-year contract with the Canton Teachers Association. Under the agreement for 2011-2012 school year, the CTA agreed to take a zero percent cost of living (COLA) increase. The entire contract will be posted on the school's website, according Chairman John Bonnanzio. Also at the meeting, the committee met students from the German exchange program at Canton High. Highlights from the Canton School Committee: Breakfast, Healthcare and Student Population

The Canton School Committee met Monday night.

A healthy breakfast and more sleep could be in store for Canton students. At Monday night's Canton School Committee meeting, the committee members heard presentations from Martha Lawless on food services and Nurse Leader Janet Donnelly. The committee also discussed delaying the start time for the high school. Lawless gave a presentation on the need to add a student breakfast program to Canton public schools. Citing recent studies, Lawless said school breakfast allows students to learn better, be more focused and have less behavior management issues. The goal is to add a school breakfast program to all the schools this year, she said. However, she noted there is a need for more planning. She said this year, there are 400 students eligible …

Highlights from the Canton Board of Selectmen: New HR Administrator and 9/11 Services

The Canton Board of Selectmen met this week and hired a new HR administrator.

The Town of Canton has a new Human Resources director. The Board of Selectmen, along with the Canton School Committee, officially offered the job to candidate Jody Middleton on Tuesday night. In the public meeting, the BOS and the school committee members did a final interview with Middleton, a Canton resident with an extensive HR background. After remarks from both committees and Middleton, the BOS offered the position to Middleton, who seemed happily surprised. She thanked the board and the school committee. "I started this journey back in May," Middleton said. "You really brought me out of my the comfort zone...I'd be proud to work with the town of Canton."
