Blue Hills Football Coach Receives Officials' Coach of the Year Honors

Blue Hills' Ed Catabia named football officials coach of the year.

  The Eastern Massachusetts Association of Interscholastic Football Officials (EMAIFO) announces the selection of Ed Catabia of Blue Hills Regional Technical High School (Canton) as its 2012 Robert Donovan Coach of the Year.  The Coach of the Year award is awarded annually to the high school football coach who best exemplifies high ethical standards in the teaching of the game of football to boys so that they become men who exemplify the finest traits of American sportsmanship. Catabia has coached at Blue Hills for 33 years, the last five as head coach. And while this award is not about winning, his success on the field is as impressive as his success in keeping to the standards of this award. In the 33 years he has been associated with …

Nurses Trained at Blue Hills Regional Honored by Boston Globe

Braintree and Norwood nurses, both trained at Blue Hills Regional, were honored recently for their work.

Sharon Valle and Judy Dynan epitomize the very best of what modern nursing is all about. Both women are compassionate, highly-trained, dedicated, understanding, wise and totally focused on going “above and beyond” for patients and their families. Valle, of Braintree, and Dynan, of Norwood, recently expressed their immense gratitude for being among the nurses honored in the Boston Globe’s 2012 “Salute to Nurses,” a special section published annually which celebrates dozens of outstanding men and women in nursing across Massachusetts who are nominated by those who know them, especially people whose lives they have memorably impacted. Blue Hills Warriors Varsity Football Team Honored with Trip to State House

The Super Bowl champs received honors at the State House earlier this month.

It was an honorable day for the Blue Hills Warriors as the varsity football team– winners of the 2011 Eastern Mass. Division 4A Super Bowl –along with the junior varsity football team, cheerleaders and coaches, visited the Massachusetts State House on Thursday, February 9 at the invitation of Senator Brian Joyce. When asked about how the players felt about the trip, star running back Vincent Burton of Randolph said, “It means a lot to finally get recognized for our accomplishments and success for the season. Canton's Blue Hills Regional Adopt-a-Shop Funds New Equipment

The program funded purchasing of new tools and equipment valued at $8,600.

By Judy Bass Adopt-A-Shop, an organization conceived by Blue Hills Regional Technical School alumnus and Canton resident Gary Titus ’75 in 2002 to enable individuals or companies to make tax-deductible contributions of money or materials to support the school’s outstanding technical and academic programs, recently funded grants totaling $8,600 for the purchase of tools and equipment for some of its technical programs. In November, explained Adopt-A-Shop Executive Director Marybeth Nearen of Randolph, the organization sent a notice to Blue Hills teachers that they could submit requests for grants to Adopt-A-Shop for education-related materials that they needed for their programs.  The requests had to be aligned with the Massachusetts …

Blue Hills Regional Technical School walloped Bristol-Plymouth during the annual Thanksgiving Day football game on Thursday at Blue Hills in Canton. Blue Hills beat Bristol-Plymouth 38-6. Young Braintree Woman, Blue Hills Grad, Dies After Accident in Weymouth

The 21-year-old woman was from Braintree, and died at South Shore Hospital Tuesday night.

Stephanie Harrington, a 21-year-old Braintree woman and 2008 graduate of Blue Hills Regional Technical School, has died of injuries sustained during a car accident in Weymouth on Tuesday night, according to news reports. Both the Patriot Ledger and WHDH have reported that Harrington was hit by at least one vehicle at about 8:30 p.m. while attempting to cross Route 53 in Weymouth. The Ledger is reporting that she was hit by two vehicles, the second after she was thrown into oncoming traffic by the first. Weymouth police told the Ledger that the second vehicle did not stop. Harrington was brought to South Shore Hospital after the accident, where she died as a result of severe injuries, the reports said. SSH spokeswoman Sarah Darcy confirmed …

Blue Hills to Induct Four Into Athletic Hall of Fame

The ninth annual Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony is set for November 18.

The Blue Hills Regional Technical School’s Athletic Hall of Fame Committee invites the public to the school’s ninth annual Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony. The event is scheduled for Friday, November 18, at 6:00 p.m. at the Randolph Elks, 21 School Street in Randolph. This year’s inductees are Paul Torney (1976-2005), who was the Blue Hills Athletic Director for 15 years. Mr. Torney also taught Physical Education and was the school’s Pool Coordinator. Another inductee will be Tim Gardner of Norwood (Class of 1980), who participated in football, basketball and track, and also taught at Blue Hills and coached. Representing Blue Hills’ female athletes will be Kristina O’Donnell of Randolph (Class of 1992) and Kristine Skutt of Dedham…

Blue Hills Teacher Bikes Across America

The Canton teacher recalls his cross-country trek.

But this summer, biking enthusiast and Blue Hills Regional Teacher Jonathan Palmer decided to undertake the ride of a lifetime, thus setting a “borderline unattainable” goal for himself – traversing the entire United States from coast to coast strictly by bike, going solo from sea to shining sea. Not only would it be the ultimate test of Palmer’s physical stamina, but of his mental durability as well. On June 25, the day after classes ended for the summer at Blue Hills Regional Technical School in Canton, where he teaches math, Palmer set off on his journey …
