Canton Getting Ready for the Fourth of July

Fireworks, activities to be held for the July 4 celebration this year.

The town is getting ready for summer. The Canton Recreation Department is prepping for Canton's Fourth of July celebration. At last week's Board of Selectmen meeting, Recreation Director Jeff Kaylor and Recreation Commission Member Larry Bogue presented an update to the board on the plans. The annual Fourth of July Celebration will kick off with a five-mile road race, Kaylor said. This will be the 38th year for the race, he said. Past races have attracted about 150 runners. The festivities will continue on July 4, 2011 from 5:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. at the Galvin Middle School. The fireworks will go off at 9:00 p.m. and last about 30 minutes. Welcome Back Fourth of July

Fireworks on tap for the summer celebration in Canton this year.

Welcome back, Fourth of July fireworks. The Canton Board of Selectmen made it official and voted to bring back the Canton tradition this summer.  At Tuesday’s meeting the board voted unanimously to host the fireworks display this year. The downside is that the town cannot afford to hold the Fourth festivities in addition to the summer block party. Unfortunately, the block party was axed for this year. Recreation Commission Chairman Larry Bogue said the fourth of July is an easier event to control for the department. The town can “control costs by cutting back on fireworks,” he told the board. I much prefer the fireworks. Canton once had a reputation for hosting the best fireworks in the area. They are also a draw to the carnival, which also helps raise money for Canton. The block party was good the 1st year or so, but I think that it has gone downhill every year since.
