Canton Man Indicted in Alleged Logan Airport Taxi Bribery Scheme

Cash, lottery tickets and cigarettes are among the items state police say were used in the briberies.

A Canton man was among five Massport employees indicted earlier this week by the Suffolk County Grand Jury for allegedly taking bribes in exchange for preferential treatment for taxi cab drivers picking up passengers at Logan Airport, the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office said.  James Mulrey, 45, and the four others were named in a 53-count indictment. Mulrey is accused of five counts of soliciting or accepting a bribe as a public employee and two counts of soliciting or accepting an unlawful gratuity as a public employee. He is scheduled to be arraigned May 24 at Suffolk Superior Court. Mulrey and the other men were arrested in February following a three-month investigation in which the employees received more than $1,000 in bribe…

Suspicious Package Holds Plane at Logan

The plane has been evacuated and baggage taken off for inspection by law enforcement officials, according to several reports.

UPDATE TUESDAY, APRIL 16, 11:55 A.M.: The suspicious package on the plane was re-screened and cleared by security officials, according to the TSA (Transportation Security Administration). In a press statement, the TSA said that the checked bag was re-screened at Logan after baggage handlers in Philadelphia "noted concern." The plane landed safely at Logan and passengers were bused to the gate.  "While properly screened by TSA at Philadelphia International Airport (PHL), the bag was re-screened by local EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal team) at BOS as a precaution and has been cleared," the statement said. UPDATED: Canton Man Arrested in Alleged Airport Taxi Bribery Scheme

A Canton man was among five Massport employees arrested Tuesday for allegedly taking bribes in exchange for preferential treatment to taxi cab drivers picking up passengers at Logan Airport. James Mulrey, 45, of Canton, and the four others are expected to be arraigned Wednesday in East Boston District Court. The arrests followed a three-month investigation in which the employees received more than $1,000 in bribe money, according to the state police. They allegedly took $20 to $40 at a time, but may have also accepted lottery scratch tickets, cigarettes and "other goods," state police said.  "Working men and women shouldn't have to grease someone's palm just to make an honest living, but the defendants are accused of demanding just that," …

Boston Logan Airport Officials to Meet, Discuss Increased Security

Security levels at the airport have not changed since the news of Osama bin Laden's death. Federal officials have not called for increased measures.

News of Osama bin Laden’s death was met with cheers and tears Sunday night, but thoughts quickly turned toward security concerns. At Logan International Airport in Boston, there has not been a bump in security measures, though that may change as officials meet through the day Monday. Logan is where American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 departed from before crashing into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York on Sept. 11, 2001.
