Princesses Attend Royal Fundraiser at Canton Public Library

Sold-out fundraiser for the Canton Public Library drew princesses from Canton and other "kingdoms" for a night of royal fun.

The annual at the Canton Public Library on Sunday helped raise funds for the Friends of the Canton Library. The princess-themed party sold out and was sponsored by the The librarians of the Children's room also helped organize the event.

Parents were full of good things to say about the event.  "I think this is one of the greatest things...in Canton," said Dorice Khoury of Canton. "This is a home-run for little girls.  It appeals to a wholesome side for eight and nine-year-old girls that pop culture often misses...and the volunteers are so invested in the girls having a great time."

The 50 girls, donning their finest princess-wear for the event, were greeted by King Mike (Friends of the Library President Mike Sundin) who looked regal in his crown and cape. The girls were led through a series of royal activities throughout the library. Queen Anne the Librarian read several princess-themed storues by the light of the library's fireplace.

A juggler entertained the participants on their way to the "Alchemy Room," in which a local science teacher mixed princess magic with science.  A "princess detector" bubbled in each girl's hand, proving they were "real princesses."  Black-lights displayed real "gold" and potions were concocted that bubbled, fizzed and even changed colors.

Next, the girls attended the royal game room, where they played "Guess What's Missing from the Treasure Chest." This activity  which was staffed by high school volunteers, including one of the "Friends of the Year," Erika Berman.

"She is one of our best volunteers," praised Mary Jane Mangan, a Friend of the Canton Library who coordinated the event.

The girls created beautiful princess hats with the help of Florence Poznysz, children's librarian, and Betty Ann Swartz, a recently retired Canton librarian. Both women have volunteered at the event for the past four years.

"I miss the kids, so I wanted to come back and help out," Swartz said.

Many of the girls chose to sleep over in the Special Event Room after the evening's activities were conlcuded. All princesses were exhausted after a full evening of royal fun at the Canton Public Library's fundraiser.
