The Voice of the Bulldogs since 2008, he enjoyed explaining sports to people and he is good at it. CHS honored Counterman with a special award earlier this month.

Athletic Director Daniel Erickson’s speech meant as much to Counterman as the award itself.

Remembering where it began–in Ed McDonough’s TV Production class–the recent graduate said most students focus on making movies and short films. As a sportsman, he took the opportunity out-of-the box.

McDonough showed him how to edit and air his tapes, and Counterman discovered how much he wanted to announce games, compile stats and interview players, carving out his place as a sports commentator.

Starting out sophomore year announcing football games with friend , Counterman continued on his own when Charles played basketball senior year. Most of his games aired on Canton Community Television, and the station had Counterman  announce for them a few times.

He wants to be a sportscaster, and has been accepted to Massasoit Community College and Curry College, where he will announce games on radio and TV.

Counterman’s impressive experience becomes even more so in the face of uncommon challenges. Diagnosed with muscular dystrophy at age three, it was expected he would need a wheelchair by age seven or eight.

Defying the odds, Counterman played basketball and golf until age 16. He knew he wanted to stay involved when he could not play sports any longer; he remains active today by standing and swimming.
